Tetris is the best selling mobile app with over 100 million downloads.

Tetris is the best-selling mobile game of all time, with more than 100 million paid downloads on cell phones around the world.

That’s according to the companies behind the 25-year-old game, which plan to formally announce the milestone on Thursday.

Created by a Soviet programmer in 1984, Tetris rode to popularity on the Game Boy in 1989. Millions of people have continued to play it since, on gaming consoles and over the Web, as well as on mobile devices.

The game’s neat interface, simple controls and addictive nature make it especially well-suited for mobile gadgets. These include the iPhone as well as simple cell phones.

Blue Planet Software licenses Tetris to EA Mobile, a unit of video game company Electronic Arts Inc.

  5. Sam at 2:37pm 21st January 2010 I love that they show the image of Tris. That was a fantastic game, too bad it was removed. They deserve more credit like this. Thanks Digital Trends for the reminder!

    Tetris is a totally monopoly.

  7. Ben at 1:38pm 21st January 2010 I'm not sure you're aware - but the image with this post is incredibly ironic. The game pictured, Tris, was available for free for the iPhone and was taken down after EA issued a cease and desist order forcing the developer to cancel the project. It was such a great app - it's a real shame it was taken down.
