best-android-phones

We've compiled some of the best Android phones on AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon into one list.

It’s been a while since our last roundup of Android phones, but we’ve gathered our favorite phones from all four carriers. All of these devices could be considered high end. At the rate smartphone technology is evolving, we recommend that you don’t buy a phone that doesn’t run Android 2.3 (Gingerbread), have a dual-core processor, and a high-resolution screen this holiday season. Believe it or not, a number of these high-end devices carry prices as low as $100. Others cost a bit more, but may be worth the investment.

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Samsung galaxy Nexus front

Screen: 4.65-inch Super AMOLED, 720×1280 pixels
Specs: 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB storage
OS: Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich)
Camera: 5MP rear (LED flash, 1080p rec), 1.3MP front
Price: $200 with two-year contract
Availability: Sprint, Verizon

Description:  The Galaxy Nexus is a Google Experience phone and the first device that runs Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and it’s compatible with 4G LTE networks, which is very good. It has a completely revamped user interface and is one of the only phones on the market to get updates as they come out. While owners of other Android phones have to wait for months (or never get updates), Nexus owners get updates on time. We’re big fans of the Galaxy Nexus, though its battery life is its one weakness. Sprint buyers will get Google Wallet as well. Read our full review.

HTC One S

HTC One S front

Screen: 4.3-inch AMOLED, 540×960 pixels
Specs: 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage
OS: Android 4.0 (ICS) running HTC Sense 4.0
Camera: 8MP rear (LED flash, 1080p rec), .03 (VGA) front
Price: $200 with two-year contract
Availability: T-Mobile

Description: If you want the best HTC phone currently on the market, look no further than the One S, it’s a great size that shouldn’t be too small or too big for most users and is one of the fastest (as fast as quad-core phones) and sleekest devices on the market. It also runs Android 4.0, which is great. There just aren’t any big downsides to the One S. It’s like the Amaze with an even better camera, twice the processing speed, a better screen, and decent battery life. Read our full review.

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx

motorola-droid-razr-front

Screen: 4.3-inch Super AMOLED, 540×960 pixels
Specs: 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB storage
OS: Android 2.3 with NinjaBlur
Camera: 8MP rear (LED flash, 1080p rec), 1.3MP front
Price: $300 with two-year contract
Availability: Verizon

Description: The Droid Razr Maxx doesn’t catch your eye like the original Razr, but it’s a lot thinner and sports the best battery life we’ve seen of any smartphone on the market. Compared to previous Motorola phones, it also has a much-improved screen, and its frame is quite durable as well. The only downsides are Motorola’s weak camera and bland interface. Hopefully, when the Razr gets Android 4.0, it will look a little nicer. Still, with fast LTE speeds, the Razr is one of the best phones on the market. Read our full review

Samsung Galaxy S II

samsung-galaxy-s-ii-sprint-epic-4g-touch-front

Screen: 4.5-inch Super AMOLED, 560×940
Specs: 1.5GHz dual-core, 1GB RAM, 32GB storage
OS: Android 2.3 with Samsung TouchWiz 4.0
Camera: 8MP rear, 2MP front
Price: $200 with two-year contract
Availability: AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Ting.com

Description: The Galaxy S II took its sweet time coming to North America, but it was worth the wait. The phone has now launched on three of the four major U.S. carriers. It doesn’t disappoint in any one area, though its plastic construction may turn off some, though we like how light it is. Samsung’s TouchWiz 4.0 interface rivals HTC’s Sense as does Samsung’s cameras. AT&T’s Galaxy S II is a bit smaller than Sprint and T-Mobile’s at 4.3 inches and each model looks a bit different, but all three are mostly the same. Read our full review.

Motorola Photon 4G

motorola-photon-4g-front

Screen: 4.3 inches, 540×960 pixels
Specs: 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage
OS: Android 2.3 with Motorola NinjaBlur
Camera: 8MP rear, .3MP VGA front
Price: $200 with two-year contract
Availability: Sprint, Ting.com

Description: As time has wore on, we’ve missed having the Photon in our office. It suffers from a somewhat bland screen and interface, but everything else about it is great. The phone has a kickstand so you can prop it up like a clock, it docks with a ton of Motorola accessories (though they’re expensive), and is one of the most comfortable 4.3-inch phones we’ve held due to its button placement and rounded edges. At $200, it’s a great 4G phone. Read our full review.

T-Mobile MyTouch 4G Slide

htc-t-mobile-mytouch-4g-slide-front

Screen: 3.7 inches, 480×800 pixels
Specs: 1.2GHz dual-core, 768MB RAM, 9GB storage
OS: Android 2.3 with HTC Sense 3.0
Camera: 8 MP rear (LED flash, 1080p rec), 0.3MP VGA front
Price: $200 with two-year contract
Availability: T-Mobile

Description: If you prefer a QWERTY keyboard, you’ll find no better option than the 4G Slide, which packs almost as powerful a punch as the Amaze 4G. We’ve reviewed this phone and found it to be one of the best phones on T-Mobile. The touchpad is useful as well, though we didn’t use T-Mobile’s MyTouch button very much. Read our full review.

Motorola Droid 4

motorola-droid-4-shot

Screen: 4.0-inch PenTile LCD, 540×960 pixels
Specs: 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB storage
OS: Android 2.3 with NinjaBlur
Camera: 8MP rear (LED flash, 1080p rec), 1.3MP VGA front
Price: $200 with two-year contract
Availability: Verizon

Description:  The Droid 4 is what the Droid 3 should have been. It has the best keyboard on the market, 4G LTE connectivity, decent battery life, and the power of a dual-core processor. Some typical Motorola problems remain, like a weak camera, lame screen, and bland Android UI, but if you want a keybaord, none of this will matter too much. Read our full review

  68. steveymacjr at 7:07pm 22nd November 2010 SOme thing that should have been included in the comparison, is the carrier... The EVO 4G on Sprint is the best Value and Sprint does not impose any data caps on 3G or 4G, even when used as a hotspot. Unlike Verizon Wireless, which has a 2GB cap when you use the Droid X as a hotspot. T-Mobile may say they have no cap, but after you hit 5Gb you are speed limited.

  72. jason at 2:41am 13th November 2010 All I have to say is EVO 4G ......... best phone I've ever had I just joined sprint and it works great the touch keyboard work wonders just like a regular one thanks for the upgrade
  73. jerry at 8:59pm 11th November 2010 Droid x is hands down the best.
  74. john at 10:33am 27th October 2010 Well actually the htc tmobile G2 is the fastest of all android phones in the android world. It runs 2.2 froyo straight out the box and has a 2nd generation snapdragon processor. On quadrant its bench mark exceeds 1700, beating the droid x and nexus one with 2.2. The samsung galaxy S phones are only running 2.1 like the vibrant. I own a G2 myself and I. Had previously used the mytouch 3G and the tmobile G1. And I gotta say this experience is amazing.
    1. Tom Pajak at 10:22am 10th May 2011 Don't believe benchmarks..Digital Trends showed how Quandrant can be manipulated into showing great results..so take the results with a grain of salt

  81. jackjack at 7:13am 15th August 2010 So in other words you aren't rating the evo, your rating sprint, right? I am just wondering because all of the reasons your not getting the evo, which I believed is hands down the best phone on the market period, are because it's only available on sprint.
  82. ted at 9:07pm 13th August 2010 i tested the evo and i am now getting deroid x and the evo was a assume phone but worst of it , the phone had to deal with sprint, i think there service is bad and i got lost calls and data plan did not work where i needed, now i am going to try the deroidx and see what hapen with it, i hope to see better results.
  83. FlyingRequin at 10:20am 13th August 2010 Where is the Samsung Galaxy S? This the fastest phone, best GPU, most inbuilt memory.... hmmmm but you have 2 droids.......
    1. Endoran at 12:19am 30th August 2010 I don't think any of the Samsung Galaxy S phones had been released when this review was published. The Galaxy S would be at the top though.
      1. Jula at 12:05pm 20th November 2010 I saw Samsung Galaxy S offered for 200 with service 500min and rest unlimited on Cellulor Soth. Did any body know about their service? I'm new to cell business. I need phone thie sim card so I can use in Europe. Any Help?
      2. bobthq at 12:06pm 20th November 2010 The Samsung Captivate IS the Samsung Galaxy S version AT&T, the other version for Tmobile is the Samsung Vibrant. They're twins but I think the captivate is a little better that's why they include in this review, it looks nicer than the vibrant too

  88. frank frederic at 4:10am 1st July 2010 I have read somewhere that the iPhone 4.0 pacts Six-Axis motion sensors. (like those of the Sony Play Station 3 wireless controller) This open a huge potential of what the phone can do with these sensors, (I've not seen any iphone app that use them though) Any Android manufacturers has plan to catch-up on this feature?

  90. calmadillo at 5:48pm 29th June 2010 Which of these phones has a physical keyboard, and which use the screen for typing? I really don't want to get a phone that doesn't have a keyboard. Thanks!
    1. Greg at 7:02pm 29th June 2010 The original Motorola Droid is the only one with a physical keyboard.
    2. JTaylor94 at 5:29pm 1st February 2011 The HTC G2 has a slide out keyboard as well as the touch screen with SWYPE. And it's a really awesome phone, too. I have one and...except for the fact that the original SIM card didn't work...have had no issues. Yes, battery time could be better, but if you stay connected to WiFi all the time as I do, then obviously the battery isn't going to last as long. And it's a little weighty, but I find that to be quite nice and almost reassuring of quality equipment. It's sturdy, basically.
  91. deepil mehta at 3:21am 22nd May 2010 how would you rate the xperia x 10 sony ericsson
  92. Ian Bell at 6:25pm 21st May 2010 Every single phone here has been tested on Digitaltrends.com. Did you look at the chart on the last page?
  93. DrK at 5:43pm 21st May 2010 Did you actually TEST the stand-by and talk time, or just believe what their marketing dept. put on a web site? How many of them were standby w/ the WiFi on? G2.5 v. G3? GPS? These make a huge difference, and there is a reason while even today, if I am traveling I bring a spare battery for even a ONE DAY trip (of course, my batteries are getting old, but my G1 has had battery issues since day 1!). How much video playback? Can you get to the end of a movie on a flight and still have enough juice to call a cab?

It would also be very helpful to include the G1 as the "reference". It also is important to consider the data input features. While I don't enjoy typing in full length documents w/ my G1, I can, but only because of the keyboard. I am NOT going back to a phone which does not have a full slide-out keyboard (esp. after the PITA that the Blackberry Perl turned out to be).

When you do reviews, you have to cite your sources. It is great you took the time to pull this info from other sources, but if you do it RIGHT it is much more helpful. Cheers
    1. Zewe at 5:47am 15th September 2010 A little uptight aren't we? Your questions about testing stand-by and talk time as well as citing the resources are pretty clear from reading the article. How about not being an internet troll and bash someone for something 1) they did, you just missed, and 2) done as a free public service. You might want to at least appreciate that someone is trying to do something for others... Something that you and I both apparently needed, because we searched for, found, read, and responded to the article. Cheers
  94. facebook-711717333 at 11:43am 14th May 2010 Does talk time include using network features or other applications on the phone? If not, then that needs to be an additonal category as the Android OS has a rich market of applications. My expereince is that I get about 5 hours or so (not a timed quote...so that is not precise) reading ebooks, surfing, using facebook and listening to music via Pandora.
  95. Yongho Kim at 9:14pm 11th May 2010 Motorla Droid is now free with a 2 year contract on most authorized retail stores
  96. Juan at 4:44pm 11th May 2010 Is my assessment correct that GSM capable phones are more likely to go viral? If that is the case, is the Droid Incredible GSM capable? I would really like to see it added to the T-Mobile line of phones. I think it is the #1 phone by far. The only thing I'm not sure of is of it's flash capabilities.
    1. killabeetle at 10:57am 5th February 2011 xvi the incredible along with all verizon phones if you want a similar android fan phone then grab a nexus 1 I use one on tmo con has mobile hotspot free adobe flash and can download from the net unlike verizon boo verizon. con 5mp camera instead of 8 on incredible btw at&t and tmobile use gsm and boost sprint and nextel use iden tech. Hope that helps.
  97. Ian Bell at 4:14pm 11th May 2010 Good idea, we will get one added as quickly as possible.
  98. Steven Holms at 4:06pm 11th May 2010 Instead of the Eris, I would have chosen the Hero. Since the Eris is one of three flavors of the Hero, it makes more sense. You have the CDMA Hero for Sprint, the Droid Eris on Verizon which just has a different body, and the original GSM version which is a different body, and different radio. Also, I was disappointed that the Evo wasn't even mentioned. It is a Nexus One on steroids. Large screen, 4G, Snapdragon, HDMI out, 8 MP 720p camera with dual led flash, etc. Other than that, this list is actually really good.
  99. the obnoxious at 3:41pm 11th May 2010 so I see the phones, but where is a comparison chart?

  100. Michelle at 4:09am 10th March 2010 If you talk about android then i have only used it on T- Mobile G1 .
Here are my impressions about T- mobile G1 phone:-
G1 slide out QWERTY keyboard, support for the fast 3G networks, GPS and Bluetooth technology, offers a number of free apps through Android Market and much more. The compass mode works absolutely well, spin it in any direction it will move fine.
The phone of my dreams, I have it for a while now and it is still in really good condition.

    2. Cindy Giventer at 6:23pm 29th August 2010 Yes, but the Mytouch 3G slide is all that plus it has the GENIUS button, SWYPE, & THE DRAGON DICTATION! Best DROID HTC, in my opinion! LOVE THIS PHONE BY TMOBILE!
    3. Daniel at 6:08pm 25th October 2010 i agree i had the G1 was great but i have now got the desire took some setting up and playing with to get used to it but it is by far the best phone out there at the min my mates have all the latest phones out and all of them want to swap never going to happen
