T-Mobile does a 180 and restarts Sony Xperia Z3 sales with lower price tag

It was earlier in April when T-Mobile announced that, after being available for less than six months, the Sony Xperia Z3 would no longer be available for purchase. As interesting as this move was, it’s even more intriguing that the smartphone is once again available through T-Mobile.

Looking at the Xperia Z3’s page on T-Mobile, not only is it available for purchase, but T-Mobile even discounted the handset, dropping the price to $500 if you want to buy it outright. This represents a $130 price cut from the smartphone’s original $630 price tag, which it had before it was mysteriously discontinued. If you opt for an installment plan instead, you’ll be paying $20.83 a month for 24 months.

The price cut poses the interesting question of why the Xperia Z3 was unavailable to begin with, and why T-Mobile decided to once again sell the smartphone. For all we know, the Xperia Z3 could still be on the way out, seeing how Sony recently announced its successor, the Xperia Z4, though it was only made available in Japan. To make the matter even stranger, the Verizon variant of the Xperia Z3, the Xperia Z3V, was still available, even when the Xperia Z3 on T-Mobile wasn’t on sale anymore.

For the most part, the Xperia Z4 is a carbon copy of the Xperia Z3, and even James Bond himself is not impressed with Sony’s latest and greatest. Odds are we’ll see it in North America and other regions sometime in the near future, but Sony has yet to make such an announcement.

How Sony’s camera guru is transforming Sony Mobile, starting with the Xperia 5
Sony Xperia 5

When Sony first introduced the DSC-RX100 in 2012, it delivered DSLR-quality pictures in a pocket-friendly, point-and-shoot camera. It was a trailblazing product that used a brand new 1-inch sensor when everything else comparable around it used smaller, less capable sensors. This is the camera that helped the company’s imaging division become the powerhouse it is today.

It was also primarily the project of Kimio Maki, who headed up Sony Imaging at the time. In June 2019, he became Executive Deputy President Sony Mobile and there are plans afoot to perform the same turnaround at the struggling mobile division. In the same way as the RX100 appealed to creative people who wanted pro-level products in their hand, Sony’s strategy to make its current and next generation smartphones more appealing follows a very similar path.

T-Mobile’s 5G network is blazing NYC’s lower east side. Here are our test results
T-Mobile 5G test

5G has come to New York City, though you’ll need to spend a pretty penny and be on T-Mobile to access it. The “un-carrier’s” 5G network launched in select areas of six U.S. cities today -- including the Big Apple -- but the only phone to support the fledgling network is the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. It’s on sale now from T-Mobile for $1,300.

I took the phone for a spin to see what faster speeds mean when you’re bustling about in the streets of New York. But first, what on earth is 5G?
5G and spectrum
5G is the fifth-generation of mobile network technology, following 4G, 3G, and 2G. It brings super-fast connectivity speeds, and ultra-low latency, which is the measure of the delay between data transfer speeds.
