Verizon Wireless has started looking into becoming Canada’s fourth major wireless communications company. The Globe and Mail reports that the U.S. mobile carrier might take over one of the country’s smaller wireless companies, such as Mobilicity or Wind Mobile. Those and other smaller mobile providers have helped drive down Canadian wireless prices, but haven’t turned the kind of profits they need to prosper. Verizon could buy one of these smaller companies before too long.
The Canadian government has high hopes for a fourth major player in its wireless industry, and the younger companies that struggle for business is a problem. The country’s three major service providers – Bell Mobility, Rogers Wireless, and Telus – have no competition right now.
The Globe also mentioned that, whether or not Verizon’s plans for Canada are successful, other providers might step into the Great White North wireless game, like AT&T, Telenor ASA, and Vodafone.
With so many companies vying for a spot as Canada’s fourth major provider, it may not be long before a bidding war breaks out.
