VoIP For iPhone 3G - But Not To Talk

VoIP Services should be coming to the iPhone 3G soon — the only problem is that you won't be able to use it to make voice calls.

The range of apps for Apple’s iPhone 3G continues to grow, and now VoIP is on the near horizon. Global IP Solutions has announced the release of a developer’s kit, VoiceEngine Mobile, that will make VoIP on the handset possible, according to Information Week.

With the kit, developers will be able to make a range of VoIP applications to be sold through Apple’s App Store. In a statement, Global IP Solutions’ CEO, Emerick Woods, said:

"The popularity of the iPhone, along with the emergence of various applications and faster connectivity, makes it an ideal platform for developing applications that incorporate quality real-time VoIP, giving consumers real-world communication experiences like in-game, multi-person chat."

But one thing you won’t be able to use VoIP for on the iPhone is talk, thanks to Apple’s exclusive agreement with AT&T. VoiceEngine mobile will only be available at Wi-Fi hotspots.
