Just checked availability in Wallmarts in Portland, OR metro area. One of them carries G1, but the price (with the 2-year contract) is $179. Without the contract, the price is $375. By the way, it's not required to get the data package, if you want just an Android phone. However, I understand, you could use Google on it using Wi-Fi.

No, the article says it's free in the UK with a $70-a-month contract. It's still $148.88 in the US.

It's only $30 difference. Is it worth your time to keep searching around for a Walmart that has one, or to just go to a T-Mobile store?

Just try and find one Walmart that has them. I have yet to find one in stock, a salesperson with knowledge or even a working display.
