Well I don't personally know whether they do or don't, but it could be you're friends with enough people that post pictures of cats or you comment on these pictures or posts mentioning cats. That said, I would in no way rule out that Facebook is using image recognition tools to see beyond what we tag in photos.

So, riddle me this. I posted a picture of my cat this weekend on my personal Facebook page. I never talk about my cats. Didn’t even mention “cat” in my post. Just a funny picture of my cat. The next day, I start getting ads that read, “Make Photo Albums of Your Cat”. Is it possible their current face recognition technology recognizes animals, then uses that info to ad target you? Don’t know if you can answer this…just thought it fit here…
