Comment on this post to enter to win a new Samsung Focus running Windows Phone 7. Just a hint, it would be a great gift for dad.

It’s almost the one day of the year solely dedicated to dads, and if we know anything about the topic it’s that dads are notorious technology lovers. Every dad has their favorite category of gadgets, but certainly one of the best gifts is always the latest tech toy out there. As far as phones go, if your proud pop hasn’t caught on to the smartphone trend yet, maybe it’s time to help him along in the process. If you’re already a dad yourself, we suppose you could buy (or win) yourself a present, too. As for my dad, whether he would ever use all of the features or not, he would sift through the weekend newspaper ads, circle all of the touch-screen smartphones, and not-so-subtly remark “yeah, those are nice.” If your dad has given you any similar hints, you’re in luck! We have a Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7 ready to be shipped out to one lucky giveaway winner.

Your dad might be in-the-loop and already have an iPhone or Android device, but if he’s waiting for the perfect gift, a new Windows Phone 7 is a great, user-friendly choice. The Samsung Focus has a large 4-inch Super AMOLED display, a 5 megapixel camera with HD video, and 8GB of internal storage. The huge display screen is perfect for running Windows Phone 7, which uses a customizable home screen of active “live tiles” instead of the static icons seen on most smartphones. This means that you can arrange your most important apps and features on your home screen and they will automatically update instead of having to be opened first. The interface is being talked about as one of the most user-friendly designs out there, with clean visuals and intuitive features, making it ideal for tech-savvy dads. For business-oriented dads, the thin and lightweight Focus has Microsoft Office Mobile built right in. If that isn’t enough to convince you, add in a weight of 4.2 ounces, a 1GHz processor, integrated social networking, Xbox Live, and access to AT&T Hot Spots and navigation.

If you’d like to win a brand new Samsung Focus for your dad (or yourself, but only if you’re a dad), write a comment below telling us a funny story about your dad (or yourself) and technology. We’ll pick a winner on Father’s Day and promptly send out the spankin’ new phone.

  1. Daniel Loniusz at 5:54am 24th June 2011 I am not a father yet, but for sure I would like to give it to my father. He uses old style Samsung phone and this new device will be a great surprise to him.
  2. Johnny Wilson at 6:57pm 21st June 2011 How 'bout me? I sure would like one!
  3. Matthew Grimes at 7:59pm 19th June 2011 The joke right now is my phone situation! My Droid (og) is broken; the cat who is in heat for the past month knocked it off the desk while doing her nightly crazy prancing about. The connectors inside the USB port bent and now it cant hold a charge- I'm going to have a go at replacing the piece soon but in the meantime I'm using my wife's old LG enV which is so uncomfortable I can't even send a proper text message. Everyone just keeps laughing at it when they see it ;/
    1. Matthew Grimes at 8:01pm 19th June 2011 Oh and my daughter can't play her Alchemy on an LG enV, hah
  4. JRG at 5:44pm 19th June 2011 I have a clamshell phone from 2007; this is EXACTLY what I need!
  5. poppygirl at 4:50pm 19th June 2011 As much as we've tried to get my dad into the new age of technology, he simply refuses to have anything to do with anything that's newer than a TV, which means no cellphone, computer, etc (and he's only 57!). The first time that we actually managed to get him to like any piece of technology is when we were shopping at Kohl's, and while we were browsing the store, my father came up to us and started animatedly talking about a a piece of plastic that could hold books. No one had the faintest idea on what he was talking about until he led (read: dragged) us to where they were selling Kindles. We haven't had enough money to buy him a Kindle yet, but we're hoping to save enough money to buy him one on his birthday, but we're hoping that a phone such as the Samsung Focus will help him get more into technology.
  6. Jennifer Apell at 4:11pm 19th June 2011 I remember quite vividly when my dad got his first touchscreen smart phone almost 2 years ago. He pressed the digital buttons so deliberately at first, even though I assured him he didn't need to. Unfortunately for both him and the reputation of cellular technology, he ended up picking a phone that is now considered a really awful model. (I also had to endure the torture of this phone model until I upgraded last week!) Now it's time for him to renew his phone plan, and I'm afraid that he'll revert back to the old phones that are not nearly as wonderful. Giving him the Samsung Focus for Father's Day would be amazing because I could show him what a smart phone is actually suppose to be like.
  7. CjM at 9:35am 19th June 2011 My family is a micro view of the tech world. Wife has an iPhone 4, 1 of my kids has a Droid 2, another has a HTC Windows Phone, and my last one has an iPad. I have had a chance to play with all of the devices and I have decided I really want to replace my old LG ENV 2 with a Windows Phone 7. I have gotten a great perspective on the apps, the total cost of ownership, and hardware reliability, etc. of many of the current products to choose from. But for father's day, I am pretty much expecting the socks and underwear.
  8. Rust Hawk at 12:53am 19th June 2011 My dad also had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the 21st century .....and I hate to admit it but I haven't worked up the courage to upgrade to "those new-fangled" smart phones. He laughs at me but we're both using the old 'phone-only' cell phones. I seem to be doing my own kicking and screaming, I think. Maybe this Samsung would do the trick!
  9. 4given_p8ntblr at 11:16pm 17th June 2011 I think a Samsung Focus would be very intuitive for my dad. It seems like Windows is all that he knows, but he knows it very well. I would also like to see him with a smart phone so that he could do more while out and about... instead of call us at home and tell him a Outlook Contact number. This would be a great chance for him to step forward with technology.
  10. tjjunkie at 11:03pm 17th June 2011 For Father's Day last year I got my old man a computer with a webcam so we could Skype. I set everything up and we Skype later that evening. Now my father's and old man that's basically blind. I try to connect to him on Skype for about a hour then I call him. I ask him what's gone wrong and he answers " Nothings wrong I'm talkin to ya right now ".Of course I answer I haven't been able to connect to you for over an hour. As it turns out my father did connect to someone but It wasn't me. Later I found out it was a 18 - 30 year old man pretending to be me. This "man" was talking to my father telling him that he was going to lend him some money wash his car things like that. So after I finish laughing at what I had just heard my father asks me " So when ya coming over to wash ma car ". Funniest fathers day ever. If I win I'd like to give this phone to my father so we can share many more memories.
  11. mrcapncaveman at 11:02pm 17th June 2011 I'm a dad and for all I think about tech I could always learn more. I am way behind the kids of today but still ahead of most of my friends, You know us old folks, just trudging along. It would be wonderful to have such a phone to play and learn with. Thanks.
  12. mmamanx at 4:36pm 17th June 2011 I would love one!
  13. Shelley Gross at 3:08pm 17th June 2011 Anyways, I would like to thank Digital Trends Daily and Samsung for giving one luck dad the chance to win the Samsung Focus. I would also like to say thanks for all of the great articles, new products, hints and tips. Without you, I may be almost as bad as my dad..No, I don't think that is possible.
  14. Shelley Gross at 3:08pm 17th June 2011 My dad is in serious need of updating his technology, he still has a rotary dial phone, a VCR, an old, giant floor model TV with the knobs, a microwave the size of my fridge and a Comodore Vic 20 - his favourite game is Pong, lol. Don't even get me started on the concept of emails, anti-viruses, Facebook or Twitter, or even user name and passwords. It's almost like there is a hunk of his brain missing.
  15. Shelley Gross at 3:07pm 17th June 2011 Thank goodness that my father is so technologically challenged that he needs help to turn the laptop on, because if he knew I was writing this he would send me out to pick a switch, lol. My father needs your help to bring him up to date and to realize that computers are not "just a fad." A great way to do that is by letting him win the sweet Samsung Focus running Windows Phone 7.
  16. l0z9 at 1:46pm 17th June 2011 One day my little daughter was playing with my cell phone and tried to touch the screen but nothing happened. She said my phone was spoilt and started crying because she though she did something to it. I had to explain to her that it wasn't a touch screen phone and she said to me, Oh, I thought the TV was spoilt too! Guess kids these days really catch up faster with technology than we can imagine!
  17. Angelique Marie at 1:07pm 17th June 2011 My boyfriend, step-dad to my daughter and dad to our daughter would simply love this. He has an iTouch (despite his huge dislike of all things Apple) and the screen cracked and Apple shrugged their shoulders and said sorry about your luck. It is less than 3 months old. So, to be able to access all of the Windows 7 things he loves without having to read thru the increasing cracks, would truely make his father's day very special! Not to mention, he will be able to share things with the kids so easily once everyone can SEE things again :)
  18. pickle at 11:45am 17th June 2011 My favorite Dad moment was when he taught me to ride a bicycle. He pushed me down a hill (I had no training wheels) and fell flat on my face the first time. The second time he pushed me down the hill I was riding as if my life depended on it (and at the age of 5, it sure felt like it did).
  19. andrew at 11:22am 17th June 2011 I think my best dad technology story dates back to when I was about 6 or 7. My dad's work gave him a laptop.... it was an old (cutting edge technology then though) apple laptop, with a black and white screen.... it even had a rolly-ball and 2 mouse buttons instead of a track pad. So he brings it home, and the next morning I wake up early, around 5 or 6am and find him sitting on a step stool at the kitchen counter with the laptop plugged into the phone jack. He had installed AOL (remember when you had to pay bu the minute) and was like "Andrew, this is the internet!" I'm like "what does it do dad?" and he responds.... "well, look.... you can play hangman."
  20. Mike C at 10:48am 17th June 2011 I'd actually love to win this phone, as a dad, for my son, who had his iPhone 4 stolen at school. He's a bit of a tech geek just like his father, a self taught computer nerd and a damn good one at that. Just last week he decided to dual boot his laptop win 7 and Linux, and we prepared it by going through all the backup steps and planning a day to do it together. Next day, lo and behold, he'd been up most of the night doing it himself. Just like his dad would have done.
  21. Heather Bush at 10:39am 17th June 2011 My Dad tries really hard to stay somewhat current. But occasionally blows it. He recently borrowed a friends phone, and kept trying to dial number but the "hang up" end call button was on the same side as his send button on his phone, and could not even after many attempts get to place the call - so he handed it to Mum who got it to work first time
  22. Chuck Eames at 10:38am 17th June 2011 Dad needs an upgrade. He's still in 1985!
  23. Prakash Kini at 10:08am 17th June 2011 Would love to get a focus for my dad. Am sure he would be really excited. Please give me the FOCUS :)
  24. Josh Goddard at 8:45am 17th June 2011 Oh yeah, I'm a father of 4. I can use one.
  25. rylanpenning at 8:29am 17th June 2011 I am a Dad and I want it!!! Giving this to my pops would be useless. He has a non-camera cellphone, at least it's color, and index fingers his one word text message replies (takes him about 5 minutes to reply "yes") and he still hasn't setup the mailbox so I can leave him a freaking message when he doesn't answer. He has at least upgraded to a single DVD/VCR combo instead of having both units because all of his VHS would go to waste and he STILL can't program it. He still has a 15 year old CRT television and refuses to get a new one despite the picture being totally red (blue/green color are broke), "It still shows a picture!" he says. His computer is solely used as a HOYLE Casino gaming device. His digital camera has pictures on it from 2 Christmas's ago because he can't figure out how to upload them and waits for my sister from California to get up here to do it (I refuse to do so just on principle). All in all, I love my father to death and he is the best man I've ever known, but he is technologically stupid beyond belief. My 2 year old is more tech savvy then him.
    1. rylanpenning at 6:47pm 21st June 2011 Today he said "Your mother logged in to the Facebook thingy and that made my email not work." Seriously, he had no idea what he's doing. At 6 years old I had to help him with our Tandy 1000 desktop. That was 26 years ago and I'm still helping him with his VCR combo. Seriously.
  26. chapman21 at 7:29am 17th June 2011 I'm really curious to see what these Windows phones are like. Dad may get a look if he's lucky!
  27. Weng Chan at 7:20am 17th June 2011 Gimme! Can take my dad out of mobile phone stone age (with his candy bar Nokia) to a decent smart phone. :)
  28. PeepingTom at 7:19am 17th June 2011 My dad is one of the first people I know to have a cell phone, but the last one to start using email (finally dragged in, kicking and screaming, around 2004 by his admin. assistant). He would feel special to win a new cell phone, and to know that the guy who made him a father won it for him.
  29. Keith Howe at 7:09am 17th June 2011 Would love to have that Focus for my dad... this way he can check the facebook... (that's what he calls it.. the facebook ;)
    1. dtkmontgomery at 11:50am 20th June 2011 Keith! You're our winner! Please proceed by emailing me (kmontgomery(at)digitaltrends(dot)com) with your address so we can send you the Samsung Focus! Thanks to everyone for participating!
    2. dtkmontgomery at 11:45am 27th June 2011 Hey Keith! We chose you as our winner! Please e-mail me so we can send you the phone. If we don't hear from you soon we may have to move on to a runner-up! Kelly
  30. Frederic Ditan at 6:50am 17th June 2011 my father never use any cellphone in his entire life, he always ask me to call him using the cellphone of my sister, unlike me my father grew in agricultural place (never dream to own a cellphone and never ask me to buy any gadget). On a father's day I want him to buy something special, something makes him happy and something unforgettable, if this promo is the answer to my prayers then i think that phone could be the best special gift that i can give to my father. To the most hard working people and to the most responsible father out there..... Happy Father's Day!
  31. Lynn Wheeler at 6:46am 17th June 2011 WOW. a new Samsung focus phone would ROCK for Father's Day! thank you
  32. Lynn Wheeler at 1:39pm 17th June 2011 that would rock father's day. !

  35. Psee200 at 4:46am 17th June 2011 I got myself a Focus and my dad is stuck with an old flip phone, I'm definite that he wouldn't mind an upgrade.
  36. hlm1024 at 3:54am 17th June 2011 I love anything Samsung! Some might say that I am a fanboy. I just recently became a first time father 2 and a half weeks ago. But if I win this it would go to my wife. For being in labor for 30+ hours. She deserves it!!!!!!!
  37. Nikhil Miriyala at 2:48am 17th June 2011 Well this is very simple...if i get this smart phone i will gift this to my Father :)

  39. Felipe Adams at 12:34am 17th June 2011 The Samsung Focus Windows Phone 7 is a wonderful phone but the stiff competition by Android is keeping the sales down. Digitally Undivided - digitalundivide
  40. robert.trel at 12:29am 17th June 2011 A couple of years ago on fathers day my kids being themselves decide to get me a gift. All my kids and my wife all chip in and get me one of the showers that plays music and shows the different color lights. I was happy for my gift and I decide to try it out that night. As I was in the shower the water started to turn darker and darker sort of like a dirt like color with a dirt like smell. I then surprised try to get out. At the end of my shower there is a platform that you have to step up onto get out. Me surprised by the incident was just sliding my feet along the bottom and I tripped on the platform. My face slams into the glass door and I stumble back onto our towel rack. From there I then roll onto the base of my shower with a bruised rib and I have the air knocked out of me. I sit there in the dirt with the dirt water splashing on my face until my wife discovers me five minutes later. BEST FATHER'S DAY EVER!
  41. El Tobe Yepez at 11:14pm 16th June 2011 I think its time I upgrade to a smartphone, hopefully this is the one ;P
  42. wisher at 10:57pm 16th June 2011 Oh and I have a 11 week old daughter. So Dad I am.
  43. wisher at 10:56pm 16th June 2011 Alright. Post for a new phone, awesome! I'd love to have my hands on one of these. Do I have to say anything special for me to win? Digital Trends is a common place for me to read articles. You guys are great! Especially Ryan. He is pretty much my gaming idol.
  44. Om Simplu at 10:23pm 16th June 2011 Excuse me father, sometimes I don't really listen to you, I know that it's too late to apologize now and to tell you I miss you, but still do...
  45. Lindsey R. Shiggs at 10:22pm 16th June 2011 I NEED this!!!! LOLOL!!
  46. tmkibon at 10:07pm 16th June 2011 its my dad dream phone he is dying to get one on his hands thanks Samsung u make my dad happy for coming up with this phone and i want to win it for him
  47. Aaron Timm at 9:45pm 16th June 2011 Well, lets see, the only funny technology story I have is similiar to another above, it was trying to find a cell phone that had numbers and buttons big enough, and simple enough for my grandma in a nursing home. this was before they started marketing those "simple to use" phones for older people. I ended up finding one we could use on E-Bay and getting it converted over.
  48. freakice27 at 9:22pm 16th June 2011 My Dad uses two phones at the moment.. the phone models? well quite primitive if you're going to ask me. Basic phones with small screens, clunky voice output, vga camera, no card slot, phone memory of not more than 4mb, and short battery life. Putting those away and giving my dad this Samsung Focus will definitely be a perfect father's day gift. The features will totally benefit my dad and make things easy for him. The 4" Amoled screen will help my dad see and compose his messages with ease compared to the phones he uses at the moment wherein he would still have to wear glasses just to read/compose messages. The built-in camera is far superior for daily usage and he wouldn't bother bringing a digital camera if in case he need to shoot some pictures. The big internal memory is a plus since he wouldn't be seeing eyesores such as 'message inbox full', 'memory is full' and the likes. The touchscreen means more interactive moments, he would definitely say goodbye to small sticky keys his' current phone has. The processor of the Samsung Focus which is 1GHz means speed, he would not need to reset his current phone when it hangs or the loading time takes a lot. Lastly, internet.. my dad been using the net only on my pc at home but never experienced being online on a mobile device. This device would make him feel what REAL technology is all about, integrating a lot of functions in one compact device. Im sure my dad will love the Samsung focus and im sure he's going to treasure it.
  49. rajeshhegde8 at 9:21pm 16th June 2011 On Fathers day I deserve Windows Phone because I'm Dad. ;)
  50. Jesús Manuel Hernández at 9:13pm 16th June 2011 I hope this is a random draw because i have nothing creative to comment I just want my dad to upgrade from his flip phone
  51. Frank Rur at 9:09pm 16th June 2011 Yes Sugar daddy me With a WP7 Phone , Because mine is about to die, and while in all honestly my 76 year old father will not be able to use it, It should will keep him happy if I have a better phone , with which I can call him more often to his nursing home in Florida ( I am stuck in Massachusetts ) Thanks Digital Trends ! ( ps my kid would also call me when he comes of age :P )
  52. duanerh at 8:56pm 16th June 2011 Why just today I got a data plan for my Blackjack.
  53. Robert Burnham at 8:37pm 16th June 2011 Not sure dad would know what do with a Windows Phone. But he would love a blu-ray player.
  54. Hamilton Pereira at 8:34pm 16th June 2011 That would be a great gift for a daddy like me.
  55. Tony Blass at 8:18pm 16th June 2011 Man I think I want this more than the elusive iPhone5.
  56. David Alexander at 8:13pm 16th June 2011 My dad want one of these!
  57. kcortes at 8:02pm 16th June 2011 written for Lola (dog) for her Dad, Sheik (human) Dad likes shiny things, I put orange ball, blue ball, fuzzy toy on these shiny things...nothing. Dad likes machines, like the small one he has on his hand but he wants a better one. Give him good machine so we have more time to play. I love Dad. He smells good.
  58. Ben at 8:02pm 16th June 2011 I just got a WP7 phone myself, and I guarantee you, my dad would love one of these!
  59. Paul Van Waardenburg at 7:52pm 16th June 2011 Dad would love one of these. I'm Dad.
  60. purify2 at 7:45pm 16th June 2011 My dad would absolutely love one of these. I have the Omnia 7 and every time he see's it he's always asking questions and asking to use it. >.< He's not very tech savvy but in typical dad style he wants to get his hands on it to try it out. Every time he's used mine hes always been happy with the stuff he can do. Unfortunately I don't have the money to buy him one since I can just about afford mine so it would light up his face if I was able to give him one.
  61. Anon at 7:34pm 16th June 2011 My dad's usually quite tech savvy but sometimes there are ingenious moments of creativity that surprise me no end. Everytime I skype with my parents, next thing I know he's snapping pictures of the screen with his smartphone and then sets it as the profile pic on the family account :/ and my disheveled out of bed face is all over the interwebs! hahah! In addition, believe it or not, but he keeps refusing android/iPhone because they lack IE!!! At first I was baffled and tried to reason with him- turns out his banking site hasn't been updated in probably a decade and ONLY supports IE!! So yea, WP7 with IE and the easily readable large tiles, plus the vibrant AMOLED screen would be a perfect gift for father's day!
  62. Syed Akbar at 7:25pm 16th June 2011 Samsung leads in cell phone business because it is up dating everything fast and user friendly.

  64. Edgardo Gustilo Cueto at 1:49am 17th June 2011 That wud be a nice father's day gift!
  65. Justin Bell at 6:40pm 16th June 2011 For a long time my dad had the typical older generations aversion to the newest technology. At one point in getting a laptop, he went out and bought a wireless router cause he thought he needed one to pick up the neighbors wireless signal. I showed him the ropes, and within a week he had a larger music library than me and the newest smartphone he could find. Nowadays he's posting auto-tuned versions of "Charlie bit my finger" to his facebook with the best of them.
  66. chitgoks at 6:37pm 16th June 2011 my dad still talks using his smartphone like a walkie talkie and puts the phone near his ear when he listens after he talks. this, even though he knows that there is a loud speaker option
  67. Tecnofanatico at 6:33pm 16th June 2011 I'm a technology fan and my 21 months daughter became a fanatic too, she love smartphone and she loves to see pictures on my iPhone and move the screen with her finger to see the other pictures, the anecdote that I have, is when we decided to give a frame with a picture of my daughter to a family member, I show my daughter the frame with her picture and the first thing that she did is try to move the picture with her finger like an iPhone.
  68. Ellen Blickman at 6:31pm 16th June 2011 Watching my 82 year old Dad discover the internet was like watching a baby take his first steps. My Dad claimed that television was the best thing since sliced bread. Years later, it was color TV. Then cable (especially the uncensored shows!) But nothing, not even a man walking on the moon, could compare with the world accessible at his fingertips through what he calls his "machine." He reconnected with his fellow Boy Scouts, classmates from elementary school and has made new "virtual" friends with shared interests. I would love to see his face when he is given the Samsung Focus and can carry this world of information and friendship in his pocket. Samsung Focus: $600. The look on my Dad's face: priceless!
  69. Jason McGuirk at 6:13pm 16th June 2011 The first time I saw my dad use my mom's cell phone in like 2006 she handed to him, he dropped it and the battery popped out when it hit the ground. He said that's it, this is not for me and to this day has refused to get one.

  78. bclark at 5:37pm 16th June 2011 Cool. I'd love to win it so my samsung galaxy S could have it's own phone. Seriously though i've never been enthusiastic about windows on a phone. Can ms get it right?
    1. Ian Bell at 5:49pm 16th June 2011 I think they have this time, it looks pretty sweet.
  79. Ilya D at 5:35pm 16th June 2011 Finally a smart phone for dad... Now don't think the old man isn't up to date on his tech... it's just that I'm tiered of seeing him juggling his personal phone AND is Blackberry, So I'm hoping a nice Window 7 smartphone would be able to do it all for him...

  81. Jordan Beard at 5:29pm 16th June 2011 The only funny stories about my dad and myself and technology is our attempts to teach my paternal grandparents how to use the tech gadgets they get. We've spent countless hours on the phone with them, after they called and asked us how to do this with their digital camera, and that with their cell phones. All the while trading witty retorts about how we're surprised they found the power button.
  82. Ernie Mathews at 5:28pm 16th June 2011 I'm a Dad, and I want one!
  83. Ian Bell at 5:26pm 16th June 2011 My dad has 3-4 CD/DVD players all connected to the same TV. A CD changer he likes to use when listening to music, a PS3, a separate Sony Blu-Ray player from Sony (which he thinks is better than the PS3) and a VHS/DVD player combo he uses to convert VHS movies over to DVD. It looks like the command center at NASA, and it is funny watching him trying to find the right remote control.
    1. Matthew Grimes at 8:07pm 19th June 2011 That actually sounds pretty funny sir.
