Zombies, Run! app is an all-in-one exercising game to keep you healthy and alive

Much to the likes of recent trends in vampires, werewolves, and zombies, several months ago the Kickstarter Zombies, Run! vowed to turn your fascination with the undead into a fun way to get some exercise in. Today, the game has finally come to fruition.

Unlike sitting at home and spending hours on Xbox’s Left 4 Dead series unmoved, the Zombies, Run! app immerses you into the post-apocalyptic, dystopian world where zombies have overrun your town. The game will deliver stories into your headphone as you take character and begin to walk, jog or run to escape from zombies. Each mission includes gaming aspects like turning left and right to find key items to accomplish required tasks and making decisions to help any survivors you may come across. For example, if you’ve collected medicine and find a soldier and a doctor, who would you give the pills to?

The main objective of the game, aside from not getting eaten by zombies, will be to collect batteries to keep your safe house base functioning as you try to uncover what happened to your world. It is imperative for the app to have a exciting, interactive and engaging storyline or else users will not continue to have interest in running or finding out more of what happened in the game.

There are currently 30 missions in the app’s first season which lasts about 20 to 30 seconds each. Every one of your exercising sessions will be recorded into the app so you can analyze at a later time how you want to change the intensity level of your work outs. If you don’t want to hear all the screams and moans from the zombies, you can also load your own soundtrack and run to your own beat.

The company believes the gamification of exercising will trick people into becoming so consumed with the game’s adventures, they forget to realize how much exercise they are doing.  When the app was still in its funding phase on Kickstarter, it had a goal of $12,500. By the end date on October 10, it garnered a whopping $72,627 and said it will take the extra money to create a “couch-to-5K” marathon feature and tried to get famous actors to lend their voices to the game.

“It’s really important to us that this isn’t just gamification,” Adrian Hon, the game designer of Zombies, Run! told Wired in an e-mail last fall. “We haven’t just put experience points and levels and nonsense badges onto running — that stuff feels really shallow really quickly. It’s probably more like a role-playing game than anything else.”

Zombies, Run! is currently only available on iOS for $7.99 while the official site promises an Android version later this spring. If you’re sold by the game’s premise, let us know in the comments if you’ve shed any pound while running to keep yourself alive from the zombie apocalypse.
