Anna Karenina might be the most famous Russian novel globally that isn’t War & Peace. Of course, Leo Tolstoy is one of the few classic Russian authors who has stood the test of time outside of his home country.
Written before War & Peace, Anna Karenina is set in the late 19th-century amongst the elites of Russian high-society. It follows the titular character, Anna Kareninia, a married aristocrat and socialite and her affair with the affluent Count Vronsky. The two fall in love and find themselves beset by societal pressures, family, and friends who know of their affair and have little tolerance for Karenina’s actions.
The film was directed by Joe Wright, previously of Hanna and Pride & Prejudice. It stars Wright’s apparent muse, Keira Knightley, as well as Jude Law, Aaron Johnson, and Kelly Macdonald.
Anna Karenina will be out on a limited release starting November 9.
