It’s been awhile since Oliver Stone’s taken on the action genre. You could argue that moments of Wall Street 2 would fall under the category, but we’d have to go all the way back to 2004’s Alexander for a true action movie, and that’s still a bit of a stretch.
Stone’s latest film, Savages, features a pretty full ensemble of actors, including John Travolta, Uma Thurman (who does’t appear in the trailor), Taylor Kitsch, Blake Lively, Benicio Del Toro, Salma Hayek, and Emile Hirsch. The movie is based off of Don Winslow’s best-selling crime novel of the same name which came out in 2010.
The story follows Laguna Beach entrepreneurs Ben (Aaron Johnson), a peaceful Buddhist, and his close friend Chon (Kitsch), a former Navy SEAL, who run a lucrative, homegrown marijuana operation. The two friends also share a love with mutual girlfriend Ophelia (Lively). Life is going well for the trio until the Mexican Baja Cartel decides to move into the area and demands that Chon and Ben partner with them.
The two refuse but the head of the BC, Elena (Hayek), sends her enforcer, Lado (Del Toro), after them and kidnaps Ophelia. With the help of dirty DEA agent (Travolta) the two friends start a war against Elena and the Baja Cartel.
Savages will see a summer release on July 6.
