The Master teaser trailer

Paul Thomas Anderson’s last film was 2007’s There Will be Blood, which garnered a number of Academy Award nominations and got Daniel Day-Lewis an Oscar win. After five years, Anderson is coming back with a new period piece titled The Master

Set in the 1950s, The Master follows a charismatic intellectual (Philip Seymour Hoffman) who launches a faith-based organization and taps a drifter (Joaquin Phoenix) to be his right-hand man. As the faith begins to gain a zealous following, the onetime vagabond finds himself questioning the belief system and his mentor.

Early script releases drew some controversy because the time-line, characters, and faith seem heavily based on Scientology. So far mums been the word from Universal and Anderson, but the idea does sound intriguing.

Expect to see Amy Adams, David Warshofsky, and Laura Dern in the film along side Phoenix and Hoffman. Interestingly, The Master will be the fifth film that Hoffman and Anderson have worked together on (the others being Magnolia, Hard Eight, Boogie Nights, and There Will be Blood).

The Master is slated to hit theaters starting on October 12.
