Emma Stone will in fact appear in next summer's Spide-Man, but not as the character Hollywood rumor mills expected.

Wow, so apparently not all rumors in Hollywood are totally wrong. Just part wrong. For a week or so, rumors — the oil in the machine that reports on Hollywood — have been floating that Emma Stone was up for a role in the upcoming Spider-Man reboot directed by Marc Webb (500 Days of Summer), and starring Andrew Garfield, whose recent turn in The Social Network has only increased the mounting expectations. It turns out that the rumors about Stone were right.  Sort of.

Contrary to the rumors, Stone, who is currently starring in the comedy Easy A, will not be playing Mary Jane Watson, but will take on the role of Peter Parker’s first love, Gwen Stacy. It is an easy mistake to make — both Stone and the character of Mary Jane are red heads, while Stacy is a blonde. It turns out that Stone is a natural blonde though, so maybe she was destined for the role.

It isn’t yet known who will portray Mary Jane, or what this means for the character of Stacy. In the comics, Stacy was murdered by the Green Goblin before Spider-Man’s eyes, long before he began a romance with Mary Jane.

Spider-Man will hit theaters in 3D, on July 3, 2012.

  1. rockcat at 5:57am 10th August 2011 Emma Stone is PERFECT for the role of Gwen Stacy. Have you seen the photo of her "in character" in Entertainment Weekly? Unbelievable! She looks EXACTLY like the character from the comic book! If I didn't know better, I'd swear that the comic used Emma Stone as the model for the character. She is going to be great in this role! Gwen is Peter Parker's original girlfriend and it's about time the movies told the real story. This is more than a reboot. It's finally the correct retelling of the story in the correct chronological order. There will be no Mary Jane Watson in this film (although I'm sure she'll appear in the sequel).
  2. wombat at 9:42pm 5th October 2010 No Gwen Stacy or the reboot will be ruined, Emma Stone is perfect for Mary Jane as she was played by Kirsten Dunst in all three movies
  3. CesarPR at 5:37pm 5th October 2010 Ohhh well I really wanted her as Mary Jane. P.S. Doesn't everybody hate that they are starting the whole spider-man thing again...I just hope that I don't have to wait for Green Goblin to get killed, for Dr. Octopus to get killed for Venom and Sandman to fight Spider-Man to see the sequel to that one because of course you can't kill Venom in one movie or everybody will hate Spider-Man from there on....TO FINALLY SEE FREAKIN' Mthoerukcfing CARNAGEEEEE!!!!!!
