Halloween is creeping up on us like a masked-faced midnight murderer – and alliteration aside – horror movie fans should scream with joy (not fear) at the awesome Friday The 13th: The Ultimate Collection box set.

For $38 blood-splattered dollars you can own this eight-disc DVD set that includes Parts I-VIII of the iconic slasher franchise. What more could you possibly ask for? How about a replica miniature plastic hockey mask, a pair of 3D glasses – and for avid collectors of all things Friday the 13th – a hard cover booklet which doubles as a DVD carrier. There’s even a kill count and list of weapons for each film that would make Mama Voorhees proud.

One of the great ironies of Hollywood – that great, self-celebrating monstrosity – is that it is reflexively embarrassed by itself. Most movies that are set in Los Angeles or are about the film industry either actually endeavor to spend most of their time outside L.A., like Preston Sturges’ peripatetic movie-biz satire Sullivan’s Travels or, if they must stand pat in the City of Angels, resign themselves either to conspicuous grime (á la Training Day) or conspicuous kitsch (á la Clueless).

Filmmakers often shy away from truly incarnating L.A., which makes sense for a town that is comprised largely of strivers from elsewhere who are there not by preference for the locale, but due to deep-seated inclination toward stardom. But despite themselves, the great L.A. movies often end up glorifying that flat-top land of pavement and promise, thereby creating the legend that has supplanted the reality in the world’s estimation of California’s most populous city. Here is a list of 10 of the best L.A.-set films, limited to one film per director.

Deadpool & Wolverine: Everything we know about the film formerly known as Deadpool 3

In retrospect, we should have suspected that Deadpool & Wolverine wouldn't keep its most famous co-star out of the title. In 2022, Ryan Reynolds coaxed Hugh Jackman into reprising his role as Wolverine for the first time since 2017's Logan. Once that happened, the name Deadpool 3 didn't fully convey how monumental this film would be.

So Marvel Studios has officially retitled it as Deadpool & Wolverine. Jackman has also humorously rebranded the film as Wolverine & [expletive], which would make this R-rated flick a lot harder to market!
