Rhys Ifans cast as Spider-Man villain

Although we don’t yet know which villain will be facing off against Peter Parker in director Marc Webb’s upcoming Spider-Man reboot, we now know that the villain will be portrayed by Welsh actor, Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). Ifans joins Emma Stone, who was announced as Gwen Stacy last week, and Andrew Garfield, who will be playing Spidey.

Although it is official that Ifans will play the villain in the movie, Sony was mum on exactly which villain that will be. It appears that the movie will be a total reboot, so it could be any villain in the Spidey universe, including a villain that has already been portrayed in the films. So let the speculation begin!

“What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker.” Webb said in a statement. “Rhys’ incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character.”

Ifans can next be seen as Xenophilius Lovegood in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. Spider-Man is due nationwide in 3D on July 3, 2012.

Black Cat sits on a chair in a Marvel comic book.

Since making his debut in 1962, Stan Lee and Steve Ditko’s Spider-Man has remained one of the world’s most popular and prolific superheroes, with the character often featured in multiple monthly comic titles and animated series at the same time. Maintaining that kind of cultural footprint is only possible with the help of an absolutely massive supporting cast of friends, allies, and enemies.
It’s a testament to the depth of Team Spider-Man’s bench that there have been 10 feature films starring the character and there are still a few major names who are waiting to make their big-screen debut. Whether they’re too new to have been included in the earliest Spider-Man movies or too important to be lumped in with a dozen other characters in a crossover film, each of these seven Spidey stalwarts is bound to get their day in the spotlight, some sooner than others.

Miles Morales falls through a multiverse portal in "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse."

Animated movies have been a staple of moviemaking since its inception, with filmmakers constantly finding inventive ways to update the medium. From Disney's Toy Story to the newly released Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, animation has produced countless movie classics. While it's entirely true that many — if not most — animated movies are hits among younger audiences, numerous films have proven over the years that the limits of animation don't stop at childhood entertainment.

Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse recently proved that those limits are almost boundless, showcasing how the art form can include anything from strokes of watercolor to comic book pop. Although the well-liked and universally praised sequel didn't make the cut in Rotten Tomatoes' top 10 animated films of all time, the film still sits at an impressive 96% (its predecessor, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, has a 97% rating). According to the online review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, these 10 films proved that they are the best of the best in animation.
