Robot throws out first pitch at Phillies game, doesn’t quite get across home plate

Take that, Skynet! Kinda tough to have your robots crushing human skulls under their metal feet when they can’t even throw a simple baseball across home plate.

Yesterday was Science Day at the Ballpark for the Phillies/Brewers game at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia, Penn. To celebrate, a custom robot built for the Philadelphia Science Festival — the aptly named PhillieBot — was invited to throw out the first pitch at the April 20 ball game. It was actually constructed for that specific purpose, a collaboration between festival organizers and the city’s Major League Baseball team. So shortly before the game started, the remote-controlled PhillieBot rolled out onto the field to throw out the first pitch to the team mascot, the Phillie Phanatic. Then this happened…

Anyone who was worried by Watson’s Jeopardy IBM Challenge win can relax a little. There won’t be any bowing before our computer overlords until they can at least throw a baseball across home plate.

Actually, ESPN reports that the feeble pitch was by design, since no one wanted to have a pneumatic piston-powered throwing machine chuck a ball at Major League Speeds. PhillieBot was constructed by members of the General Robotics, Automation, Sensing and Perception (GRASP) lab at University of Pennsylvania. It stands just shy of six feet tall, weighs 230 pounds and is built on the frame of a Segway personal transport. The robot was built as a fun way to showcase the physics of baseball in connection with the city’s ongoing science festival.

Transformers One trailer turns an origin story into a buddy comedy
The main heroes in Transformers One.

The Transformers animated series from 1984 first established an origin story for Optimus Prime and Megatron on their home world of Cybertron. But as originally envisioned, Megatron, the future leader of the evil Decepticons, was only a false friend to Orion Pax, who would go on to become the Autobots' leader, Optimus Prime. Subsequent incarnations in other media have reconfigured that relationship, but the upcoming animated movie, Transformers One, is the first to take the future rivals and pair them up in a buddy action comedy.

The 31 best Netflix drama shows right now (April 2024)
The cast of Black Sails.

It's not often that Netflix gets to add a pirate drama to its lineup of shows, simply because there aren't many live-action pirate series to begin with. But since Starz already spent the money to produce Black Sails a decade ago, Netflix gets to reap the benefits by adding it. Similarly, BBC America's spy thriller Killing Eve is also joining Netflix this month. Both shows had multiseason runs, which make them perfect for bingeing.

Our third addition to the lineup in April is One Day, a romantic drama that chronicles a relationship through its beginning and all the way to the end. One Day also has a lot of episodes compared to other Netflix originals, and you'll want to keep some tissues handy because it's a tearjerker. Keep reading for these and more of the best dramas on Netflix right now.

In Abigail, what starts as the greedy kidnapping of a powerful man's daughter turns into a desperate, rats-in-a-maze fight for survival. After two of their team members are savagely murdered, Joey (Scream 6's Melissa Barrera), Frank (Dan Stevens), Sammy (Kathryn Newton), and Peter (Kevin Durand) realize that Abigail (Alisha Weir), the little girl they were hired to kidnap, isn't an innocent ballerina but a centuries-old vampire. In case that wasn't bad enough, Abigail reveals that she specifically chose all of them as her latest targets, hired them under false pretenses, and lured them to an old family estate so that she could kill them for their past crimes against her father's criminal empire.
