Roku and Vudu are teaming up to give new Roku 4 owners an enhanced 4K viewing experience. Vudu announced today that is now offering 12 4K UHD films exclusively through its Roku 4 channel. Roku started shipping its latest media player today, so movie buffs can start watching as soon as they get their hands on the device.

Vudu, which recently upgraded its Android app for 1080p viewing, has been making video quality a priority. Today’s announcement is what the company calls “the first step in Vudu’s ultra high-definition experience,” also known as “Vudu UHD.” Though the films are currently exclusive to Roku 4, the company has plans to make them available on additional 4K-enabled devices over the coming months.

Vudu’s dozen 4K movies target various demographics and encompass a range of genres, but action flicks are especially prominent. The list includes San AndreasMan of Steel, both of the recent Sherlock Holmes movies, Magic Mike XXL, The Lego Movie, and more (full list and pricing below). To rent or buy them, users can now find them through the Vudu channel on Roku 4 devices. You’ll have to have 4K television to enjoy the enhanced viewing experience, and if your speakers are up to snuff, you’ll get improved sound as well.

Roku 4’s timing nearly matches that of Apple. (The company’s CEO, Tim Cook, announced Monday that the fourth generation Apple TV will be on sale on Oct. 26.) Yet though their timing is similar, each device has characteristics the other doesn’t. For Roku 4, 4K is one of them. In addition to Ultra HD, Roku’s improved device now features an altered design, a remote finder, universal voice search, and more.

With 4K UHD gaining momentum, Vudu’s growing library of 4K movie titles are a nice addition to what’s already available on Amazon, Netflix, and Ultra Flix.

Hulu is finally offering 4K and 5.1 surround sound audio on Roku
Roku Express 2019 remote control

While some Roku Streaming devices support 4K resolution, not all 4K streaming platforms have supported these devices. Disney-owned Hulu recently updated its user-facing help pages to inform customers that the platform is finally offering 4K streaming and 5.1 surround sound audio on Roku devices. Previously, only 1080p streaming was available via the Hulu app on Roku. The platform still does not support HDR streaming on any device.

Hulu has had a difficult time implementing 4K on its platform, announcing the capability in 2016 on select titles and devices before removing support entirely in 2018. It has since been re-added on some devices, such as the Apple TV 4K, but the move to add Roku to the list of 4K- and 5.1-compatible devices indicates the platform hasn't given up on the latest resolution tech.

Hisense R8 ULED Roku TVs deliver 4K and Dolby Vision on a budget
Hisense 65R8F

Hisense recently announced its update to the R8 series, the company's 4K Roku TVs, and once again, they're a pretty incredible value. The R8F 4K Ultra HD Roku TV will be available in 55-inch ($500) and 65-inch ($700) sizes starting in mid-December from both Amazon and Walmart.

The R8 models have always offered an impressive array of features, including 4K, HDR10, Dolby Vision, and local-dimming, but this year Hisense has added Dolby Atmos to the mix and brings its own proprietary ULED technology for enhanced picture quality. Full-array local dimming now has 56 discreet zones (60 zones on the 65-inch model), which should deliver some really good black levels, especially in scenes with high contrast ratios.
