The Expendables 2 officially earns an R rating

Despite what the Internet may have told you it seems that Chuck Norris is not the most powerful being on the planet. In an interview with Polish TV this past January the aging action star claimed that he had taken issue with the amount of foul language originally planned for The Expendables 2 and that via his gargantuan pull he’d convinced Sylvester Stallone and everyone else responsible for the series to alter the flick so that it would receive a PG-13 rating (unlike its predecessor which reveled in its R rating).

“On Expendables 2, they had a lot of hard language in there that would prevent young people from going to see it, and I said, ‘I don’t do movies like that … If you can’t take out all the hardcore language, then I can’t do it,” Norris said. “And so, they did, and they made it a PG-13 film so kids can go see it.”

Though this news outraged action fans, Sylvester Stallone went on record shortly after Mr. Norris to claim that while they had toned down the swears for Expendables 2, that the movie would still be a worthy sequel to its surprisingly entertaining predecessor. In a missive to Ain’t It Cool News, Stallone offered the following:

Harry, the film is fantastic with Van Damme turning in an inspired performance… Our final battle is one for the ages. The PG13 rumor is true, but before your readers pass judgement,  trust me when I say this film is LARGE in every way and  delivers on every level. This movie touches on many emotions which we want to share with the broadest audience possible, BUT, fear not, this Barbeque of Grand scale Ass Bashing will not leave anyone hungry…Sly

That seemed settled and fans gradually grew to accept the idea of a PG-13 Expendables 2. However, it seems that either Stallone and Norris were mistaken or the Motion Picture Association of America didn’t get the memo about the movie being sanitized. It handed down its official rating for the movie this morning, and thanks to “strong violence, language and brief sexuality,” The Expendables 2 is rated R.

Great news for fans, right? Well, maybe. We believe that Stallone did his best to meet Norris’ expectations by sanitizing the Expendables 2 script, but that for whatever reason the MPAA still thinks the movie is too much for younger teens. Thus all of the changes Stallone had to make originally mean nothing, and those kids Norris mentioned still won’t be able to see him in the flick. We’re now forced to wonder what the original, hard-R version of the movie might have looked like had Chuck Norris not been so concerned with swears in a film that routinely features people being cut in half by high-caliber firearms.
