Three new Doctor Who specials to air around August 27 premiere

Knowing that the latest season of Doctor Who will return at the end of the month doesn’t make the wait for more adventures any easier — in fact, the days seem to go by that much slower. Thankfully, BBC America has the hardcore Whovians covered.

This week, the network announced a trio of Doctor Who specials that will roll out around the August 27 premiere episode, “Let’s Kill Hitler.” The specials will each focus on a specific element of The Doctor’s universe, and feature a long list of celebrity Whovians waxing philosophic (and comedic) about the long-running British science-fiction series.

Here’s the breakdown of what’s airing and when you can catch it on BBC America:

Doctor Who: Best of the Doctor will air Saturday, August 13, at 9 PM Eastern.

Doctor Who: Best of the Monsters will broadcast exactly one week later on Saturday, August 20, at 9 PM Eastern.

Finally, Doctor Who: Best of the Companions will air on Saturday, August 27, immediately following the mid-season premiere (so around 10 PM Eastern or so).

And just to prolong the tease, the network has released a clip from the August 20 special featuring a celebratory look back at the latest season’s most buzzed-about bad guys, The Silence.

Nothing has really gone right for Stephen Strange since Avengers: Infinity War. First, he was blipped for five years, then Strange was passed over for Sorcerer Supreme. In Spider-Man: No Way Home, Strange cast a spell that went wildly out of control and nearly collapsed reality as we know it. As bad as that sounds, Strange is going to have an even harder time in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Not only does Strange have to contend with evil alternates of himself, he also has to face the might of Gargantos.

Gargantos is an other-dimensional being that may have once been one of the rulers of the Earth. He may even be considered an elder god. Time may have diminished Gargantos' grip on this reality, but he remains formidable even in his weakened state.

Two decades ago, Sam Raimi's Spider-Man helped usher in the age of the modern comic book movie. In 2004, Spider-Man 2 garnered critical acclaim to go with its blockbuster success. However, Spider-Man 3 was left with mixed reviews, and Raimi showed little interest in returning for another superhero flick. Regardless, Raimi was lured back into the Marvel fold when he received an offer to direct Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

"I got a call from my agent saying that Kevin Feige and the Marvel team were looking for a director for the new Doctor Strange movie,” said Raimi in a new featurette from the movie. “And I was a big fan of the first one — it was really intelligent and interesting. So, when that offer came in, I thought, ‘This would be a really good challenge.’”

New Doctor Strange 2 featurette offers a glimpse of madness

Prior to various COVID-related delays, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse on Madness was actually supposed to come out before Spider-Man: No Way Home. But flipping the films around in the schedule has proven to be very fortuitous, since No Way Home has given the Doctor Strange sequel a very compelling lead-in. Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) was foolish enough to meddle with the fabric of the multiverse itself when he tried to help Peter Parker/Spider-Man. Now, the bill has come due.

Marvel Studios has released a new video featurette for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness that features Cumberbatch and fellow cast members Elizabeth Olsen and Benedict Wong sharing a few teasers about what's to come. Sam Raimi, the director of the first three Spider-Man movies that starred Tobey Maguire, returned to the Marvel fold to helm this sequel. And his comments in the video are also very intriguing.
