5) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows 1&2

November 19, 2010/ July 15, 2011

Directed by David Yates

This is technically two movies (but not really). With the sun setting on the Harry Potter franchise, Warner Bros is looking to make the magic last just a bit longer, and give the final climactic episode the proper treatment that it richly deserves! Of course the fact that two movies will make twice as much money as one has nothing to do with it, nothing at all.

The Harry Potter movies have been good, and will likely be with us through repeats and rewatchings for years to come, but the plots have holes in them. For example, in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (spoilers), the final battle between Harry and Voldemort ends when their wands connect and create a feedback that saves Harry’s life and creates an eerie and memorable encounter with Voldemort’s most recent victims, including Harry’s parents. When Harry returns and talks to Dumbledore, he asks about what had happened. Readers knew through a long and detailed explanation that the wands were from the same source and so they could not be fully used against each other, something that has a major impact on the final book. Viewers of the movie were treated to Dumbledore enigmatically nodding and saying “prior incantani”. And that’s it. No explanation, no nothing. What the hell! They didn’t bother to explain how a 13-year-old boy survived a confrontation with a monster that could probably kick the devil in the balls and laugh. Then the movie just kind of forgot about it and distracted the audience with the cinematic equivalent of something shiny.

Plot holes like that exist in all of the movies, but with this being the final movie- sorry, final two movies (“alakamoney”, bam, double the profits!), hopefully the plot will at least make an effort to make some kind of sense. If it is awesome, all plot holes will be forgiven. If it sucks, it will cheapen the entire series and undermine everything that came before, and Harry Potter fans- who are legion- might take to the streets and riot. Probably not, but it could happen.

I can understand why you had to include it--it was a huge movie--for the life of me, though, I don't see why. Boring, nearly all the way through, except for Giovanni Ribisi, who added a scant few interesting moments to a way over-rated movie.
  2. Mark Allen at 10:28pm 19th June 2010 Even if the Avengers movie flops, there's no reason to believe the failure would put an end to superhero movies. Not with all of the good ones which have been made.
  3. James at 7:51am 30th May 2010 Batman 3 can't possibly suck if the Nolan brothers write the script. There very talented writers and that makes all the difference for these types of films (well, any film really). Not sure why Thor's not listed here because I have high hopes for it. Although the screenwriter has terrible credits to his name.
  4. dang at 3:54am 29th May 2010 Read what he says about Twilight and then it will make sense.
  5. pedro pimenta at 1:42am 29th May 2010 I've only got to the first entry (avatar 2 & 3) but I do really think they will suck. 'Cause... if the first Avatar sucked, how can its sequels be any good?
  6. Ellinor at 12:32am 29th May 2010 So where is Kill Bill 3 on the list :)
  7. ENAK at 10:40pm 28th May 2010 Scott Pilgrim VS The World - subliminal insertion detected... filtering.
  8. Justin at 10:08pm 28th May 2010 Other than the FX and 3D elements, Avatar was... ok... I mean really. Watch it on DVD or Bluray and all of a sudden it is just kind of another cheesy James Cameron movie. Could have been great - had all the elements - but instead, cheese fest.
  9. gevalher at 2:42pm 28th May 2010 I couldn't care less about Twilight... The Dark Cristal should be left untouched...But all my hopes rely on Captain America being the jewel of the crown of the Marvel movie line of Superheroes. Ah, please somebody tell The Powers That Be at Marvel, that Michael Giacchino should do the score for this movie!!!
  10. Avatar Rules at 12:16pm 28th May 2010 Twilight, Eclipse? Seriously?... You mean you watched the second one?As for Avatar sequel, I'm confident James Cameron will do a good job, as he's proven before with Aliens and Terminator 2.
  11. stuart at 9:07am 28th May 2010 Oh god, I wish the original Avatar was good nevermind any potential sequels. Jesus Christ that movie sucked
  12. Sam at 7:47am 28th May 2010 Some of these are a page long themselves. No way would everything fit on a single page. Time to upgrade to broadband pops.
  13. Tex Arcane at 7:39am 28th May 2010 Ten pages of material that would almost certainly fit easily on one, perhaps two pages, tops? Forget it...even with broadband this is bad user experience, guys. Dumb design will always sabotage good intentions.
  14. Ryan Fleming at 4:51am 28th May 2010 Unfortunately The Hobbit also did not make this list, because despite all the casting talk, despite all the 3D talk, despite Guillermo Del Toro signed to direct, it has not yet been greenlit either. I'm sure it will someday, but MGM owns the rights, and MGM is a mess right now; the indefinite hold on all James Bond movies should confirm that.
  15. Ryan Fleming at 4:47am 28th May 2010 I am a HUGE Akira fan. I have read every issue of the manga, and watched the anime. The movie is nowhere near production. Just like Cowboy Bebop, which I would love to see (minus Keanu Reeves), I would love to see this happen. But for now it is still just talk. As for Twilight, read the post. That should explain why it is on the list.
  16. uhh at 4:46am 28th May 2010 Kick ass isn't indie...
  17. Ian Bell at 4:37am 28th May 2010 Akira? Are you for real? 99% of the people out there have no clue what Akira is.
  18. DEDE at 4:34am 28th May 2010 Avatar sucked for people who couldn't see passed the colors and basic plot. There was real depth there, and a world with a vastness and richness that is very rarely imagined and explored on the big screen. The people knocking it are probably the same people that thought the hurt locker was good. Give me a break....
  19. Nugy at 4:31am 28th May 2010 Avatar sucked, once you got past the novelty of 3D the story line was completely predictable and totally boring, so I am expecting the same from the sequels
  20. Ryan at 4:25am 28th May 2010 Dude... Totally forgot The Hobbit
  21. whatever at 4:04am 28th May 2010 I can't believe you didn't mention AKIRA. Even worse, I can't believe you're looking forward to twilight. You fail.
  22. Laura at 3:35am 28th May 2010 I hated Avatar in all ways. The script was painful, I would have slept through it if I could but sadly the seats in the theater were way too uncomfortable. And as for the technology, please I have seen more stunning graphics in the gaming world. Until they come up with a 3D technology that doesn't have to use glasses then it is nothing new, 3D has been around since before the 40's. I could tell that it probably was a beautiful movie as far as the colors in the scenic shots, but sadly when you export a movie in 3D the colors end up getting muddy and muted. All in all a huge waste of my time and money.
  23. Miranda at 3:20am 28th May 2010 I think I might be one of the only people on the planet that thinks Avatar is over-rated. Aside from the stunning visuals, the movie bored me. Almost completely. The whole thing was contrived, predictable and without any smart or savvy dialogue to break up the monotony. So I guess I hope the next two are a little more interesting. And don't suck. But I may never know, since I doubt I'll watch them.
  24. dang at 5:04am 21st May 2010 Ya, me too. I was wondering why it was on the list until I read it.
  25. Noogie at 1:20pm 20th May 2010 I chuckled at the Twilight movie. "Even if the movie lost money, even if the movie is worse than Battlefield Earth, even if it is so bad that moviegoers begin to spontaneously combust rather than endure any more, there will be another Twilight movie. So we hope it doesn’t suck because we are already screwed."
  26. dang at 6:19am 20th May 2010 I am a bit confused as to why they would re-make Dark Crystal, but Tron:Legacy looks sweet just from the visuals alone.
  27. Ian Bell at 4:01pm 19th May 2010 Wow are you serious? Can you link me to an article mentioning it? I remember watching that cartoon as a kid, what a sweet movie it would make!!
  28. Kruti at 3:17pm 19th May 2010 how could you miss Johnny Quest???
  29. Gripp at 1:22pm 19th May 2010 James Cameron and Christopher Nolan will make incredible films. JJ Abrams and Joe Johnston will make good films. Joss Whedon and David Yates will make mediocre films. TRON: LEGACY and THE POWER OF THE DARK CRYSTAL are just a studio/corporation using nostalgia from a know property to get people in theaters. The result is usually nothing special.
  30. Jim Z at 9:48am 19th May 2010 Tron looks sick. Can't wait for it in 3D.
  31. dang at 8:46am 19th May 2010 Scott Pilgrim VS The World looks pretty funny!
