Vin Diesel back in extreme action in first trailer for ‘xXx: Return of Xander Cage’

It’s been 14 years since Vin Diesel made his debut as Xander Cage, the extreme-sports enthusiast who became a reluctant superspy in the 2002 film xXx (commonly referred to as “Triple X”) from The Fast and the Furious director Rob Cohen. After years of teasing a return to the role, Diesel confirmed development on xXx: Return of Xander Cage last year — and now the film has its first official trailer.

For anyone who wanted to see Diesel ski through a jungle or ride the side of a bus on a skateboard, this one’s for you.

Directed by D.J. Caruso (Disturbia, I Am Number Four), Return of Xander Cage brings back Diesel as the title character, as well as Samuel Jackson as Xander’s National Security Agency handler Augustus Eugene Gibbons. The film will have Xander — who was thought to be dead — come out of self-imposed exile to try and stop a deadly operative named Xiang (played by Ip Man star Donnie Yen) from taking possession of a devastating weapon known as “Pandora’s Box.” Xander must recruit his own team of agents to stop Xiang and his crew, but soon finds himself caught up in a vast conspiracy involving many of the world’s governments.

Along with returning cast members Diesel and Jackson, as well as newcomer Yen, the cast of Return of Xander Cage also includes Ruby Rose (Orange is the New Black) as Adele Wolff, Deepika Padukone (Piku) as Serena Unger, Tony Jaa (Ong-Bak: Muay Thai Warrior) as Talon, and Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries) as Becky Clearidge. Toni Collette (Krampus) will play a supporting role along with 2015 Miss Universe contestant Ariadna Gutierrez, who was famously — or perhaps infamously — crowned the champion of the contest, only to have host Steve Harvey reveal that he made a mistake and she was actually the runner-up in the beauty pageant.

xXx: Return of Xander Cage is based on a script penned by Chad St. John (London Has Fallen) and F. Scott Frazier (Collide). The film is scheduled to hit theaters January 20, 2017.
