I was surprised about this review. I have had the F40 for over 2 weeks. Never locked up once. There are different ways to navigate the music and menus, and they are not clearly noted. But once you know them they are easy and efficient. Also worth noting: this player has a very solid build. I love that I can play subscription music on this player.

Im sitting here right now typing this up and listening to music on my gigabeat WITH the slideshow running, flicking through 52 photos so i have no idea where you come up with the idea that that isnt possible. Maybe you need to use ure common sense or read the manual again. This gigabeat is impressive to me, different and looking cool. although it was a bit of a trouble to work with at beginning it didnt take me long til it worked wonders.and the sound quality sounds quality to me.

I have the F60 version of the Gigabeat for a while now and never had it lock up even with 7000+ audio files loaded. Navagation is simple and quick provided you learn how the player works. Sound quality is excellent with good earbuds or headphones. Build quality is excellent and the unit feels solid.

I love this player but i’m getting seriously pissed by people going around and saying its not a Ipod.. This thing is the true ipod killer. Sure its labeled an mp3 player but this thing is more advanced than those crappy apple shit. This thing deserves the Ipod title. I’m curious to why Toshiba didn’t name it a Ipod

Toshiba Engineers did a fine job with this one. I carry my F20 with me everywhere I go and I have never had any problems with the operation of it. I definitely would recommend this player to anyone who is in the market for one.

Skip this one seriously man, this Gigacrap has some of the worst extra features (pointless, you will never use them), the controls are just average but what ruins this player is the Gigabeat Room CD program that realy fukks it up good. If it says it’s compatible with most WMP files thats a big lie…it suports one or two image file types and there is virtualy no tech suport to help when it shits out on u!
    Why not buy?:
-8hour batt life out of 12
    -Massively confusing to use
-Tyring to download just one file and not erease the entire drive is near impossible
    -Designers in Japan on crack
-There’s a million other players to chose from that kick this one’s ass
    -0 tech help
-dosnt play videos or radio and can barley shows the pics on it already (if u figure out how to download them…)
PS. Zen Micros are also pretty bad for breaking within 3hours of purchase

Ignore the negative remarks – it is indeed a great player. Especially ignore AgentSmith – I own an Ipod, Creative Zen Micro, Creative Zen Vision: M, and two Gigabeats as a personal reviewer myself, and they’re all fantastic products.

The gigabeat is one of the worst investments I’ve ever made! I’ve owned several MP3 players and trust me… gigabeat is not worth the money! I’m no fan of Ipods either. Trash on top of trash. By far the best MP3 player I’ve owned was the Jukebox by RCA. This was the first MP3 I’ve ever bought, then I bought an Ipod which I hated, then traded it for the Gigabeat. Another mistake, but it doesn’t constantly die on me like the Ipod. Needless to say, when I decide to invest in another MP3 player, I’m going back to RCA.

Yeah, so i’ve heard the touchpad is sensitive, but who cares it has the storage size and the nice look, it plays music just fine by me. And it ain’t Apple. Good to see something else than Ipod, taking the shelf of this product range, sure needs refinement but Toshiba has made a fairly decent attempt.

I just bought an F20 for the amazing price of $249 Canadian. Everything about the player so far has been pretty slick. I was taken aback by the two instruction manuals at first, but they make operating the player and the software pretty much idiot proof. So unless you have downs sydrome, the gigabeat is awsome.

This is an excellent player. Takes a bit of time to get use to. (took me about 1 hour). After that, you’re good to go. The supplied software isn’t as hard to use as some say, I actually like it better than Windows Media Player. Yes it holds WMA files but I personally like MP3 more. If you have WMA files, just change their format to MP3 using one of the many available programs. My only complaint is that you have to go all the way to Main Menu to see the entire lists of songs. Not a big problem, but it would’ve been nice.

By the way, did any of you know you can store more than just music and photos? You can store anything on it and use this as a portable HD which is a great feature and is what pushed me in its direction over the iPod.

This device is aesthetically sufficient but when it comes to transferring files it has become quite the frustration.
Like someone else said, there is no real product support, which is what you need when it comes with this type of software (that type being ‘crappy’).
I have had problems adding, removing and renaming music files constantly. Also there is no catalogue for images so they all get dumped in the one location and you have to do a lot of scrolling to find the images you are looking for. So much writing… must stop…

I bought a GIGABEAT F20 from amazon which was delivered early January 2006. When it arrived it was OK, however recently it has kept turning off (on battery reset), twice in the past 2 months which pisses me off a bit. Also battery life isn’t as long as I had hoped. Would recommend an i-pod.

This is generaly a good player especialy considering the number of times i’ve droped it, but to synch. your music onto it is bloody a difficult task. Like, every time you buy a CD or MP3 online. I mean, sometimes it will just forget to add a song included in your synch list or it will synch 20 of the same files twice because their trac titles are slightly different. Then you gotta spend an hour deleting and renaming stuff. The software for the device that comes with the CD dosn’t have any storage area for licences so you NEED Windows Media Player to synchronize. Asides from all this, the functionality and sound quality is top quality. It’s fun to look at and share pics with if you can figureout how to do so.

The software included with this unit in confusing, bug plagued and simply awful. It adds album cover photos on it’s own to every tracks whether you want it to or not. Renames files and tracks for no reason so they’re impossible to find after they have been downloaded onto the unit. The unit itself is nice which is a moot point because what good is a pretty MP3 player that sucks at playing MP3′s. Don’t even consider buying this unit. It’s awful and a huge waste of money.

The included software is terrible. The sound quality is terrible, no matter the EQ setting. Riddled with bugs, too many flaws to list. Forget customer service, if you bought it you’re on your own. Bad Decision! Don’t follow my lead.

I find my F20 to be great. My kids all have ipods and made fun of me until I showed them how well it works. Great sound, fast data loading, and it holds pictures.

I work with Windows Media Player only. I tried Gigabeat room, found you had to make a choice between it and Windows Media, and stuck with Windows media for all my music

This thing was really good. The original gigabeat room always forze but I got the new one(3.0) and I think is much better to organize your music than Windows Media Player. But then one day for no reason the sound died out on me. Everything else was working fine and it would cost to much to get it fixed. So in the end it was a pretty good MP3 player

This is the worst mp3 player i have ever got my hands on. First off I could not get the thing to update the firmware then it would not turn off unless i used the switch on the bottom of the unit and keep getting the no system on hd error. Do yourself a favor don’t buy one

I purchased this back in February and I can honestly say it’s without a doubt one of the better systems out there today. I-pods have the their share of the market but it’s more because of the advertising and the amount of peripherals available, not because it’s a better system. I have a nineteen year old daughter and a sixteen year old son and we have had our share of Mp3 players in the house. We have gone through the I-River’s, LG and Samsung player’s and the Toshiba F20 still remains the best in durability. The only intial downside of this player was that it was a little difficult to operate by using the manual alone. Thanks to the online forums all problems were quickly resolve.

I will never buy any product from Toshiba ever again. I have two gigabeats (one for me one for s.o.), well now I have one because the other has completely ceased to function. I obviously bought them at the same time because no one would get a second once you’ve seen these. These are shoddy untested prototypes sold as working models, for example: if you ever let the battery charge run fully out, it forgets what time it is and has to have the time painstakingly reset, and the controls go haywire (in my case any time it needs recharging the button gets stuck on “up” so if I want to do anything at all other than turn the volume up really loud, like play a song for example, I have to put the gigabeat on ‘hold’ and use the remote to control it – if it can’t be done on the remote it can’t be done on my gigabeat). The gigabeat room software routinely crashes or freezes in mid transfer, and system monitor shows it using 99% of my CPU when it stalls so it’s obviously a bug. To make matters worse Toshiba has made it nearly impossible to contact them in any way about your gigabeat, and when you do speak to someone they are hands down the worst tech support I have ever seen for any product anywhere, both in complete technical incompetence “you should probably reinstall windows if gigabeat room is crashing” to general condescending ‘screw the customer’ attitude.

Do you love unstable, unreliable MP3 players… Gigabeat is for you!!
I first had problems with the Gigabeat Room transfer software, now the player won’t even boot up, it freezes at 50% loading. There is NO SUPPORT for this player and the user forums are the most help you get.

I have to say that on a cost-space basis, it outstrips the ipod by a clean mile (I saw it at 20GB, not on special, for the same price as a 6? 4? GB ipod) and I haven’t experienced any breakdowns such as the impact problems above (and I drop the thing all the time).

However, it must be pointed out that the software that comes with it for transferring files is quite buggy. Music appears on the gigabeat with the wrong artist or album, in the wrong place, and if you delete tracks, the information for them remains, and the player will try to play them even though the file is no longer there. If this won’t bother you, then this will probably be a great player for you.

The software for uploading music is ridiculous. It is hugely slow, and took over 7 hours to put my music on (only 4000 songs) and 75% of them don’t show up in the tracklist. Meaning that I have 1000 playable songs, and 3000 just sitting there for storage… in a file format nothing else can use!!

Once you’ve got your music on there, and if the player has succeeded in actually adding it to the tracklist, then it is fantastic. 20GB is a lot, and it is cheap. It has some quite neat functions, and seems relatively indestructible compared to iPods and alike.

If they fixed the software for uploading music, this would be an incredible product. Perhaps making it compatible with Windows Media Player would fix some bugs?

This mp3 player was an impressive comeback to the new iPod…it is definitely stronger in both construction, and touch-sensitive cross is easier than iPod’s stupid wheel. Software transfer isn’t the best, but is good for ripping music straight on. I recommend this mp3 player.

I’ve had my Gigabeat for 3 years and works pretty good, I’d had some problems with the software but finally I solved them, but I think the support system of Toshiba is pretty bad, in my country they didn’t even know about the Gigabeat exist. But now my f20 works well. I’ve listened that is possible to watch videos on Gigabeat f20, just have to install some software; does anybody know anything about this?

I bought the F40 two years ago and it worked just fine and I almost used all of its capacity. The Gigabeat Room was fine; I only had a few problems with where it got stuck. I like that fact that it is independent of the iTunes program. There is only one thing I have to say against it and it is that a few days ago I had a system error and I formatted it, but to no avail, but over the past two years it was perfect.
