One issue that Indie labels keep forgetting about is that they simply need massive reach to make money. There is so much competition in the space that they would literally need to sell millions of songs or albums to generate revenue. This means distribution like you pointed out Erik. Spotify, Pandora, iTunes, Amazon etc - get on all of them!

I think one relevant fact that these indie labels are missing is that their artists will be receiving income from a variety of channels, not just from Spotify. With this in mind, the pricing breakdown for artists makes more sense as a whole and their labels should think of Spotify as more of a music marketing service like YouTube instead of as a main revenue channel.

I LOVE that infographic. Whoever thought we should be cool with producers taking 5x as much as the ARTISTS get, must have known we wouldn't - because you don't often find anyone talking about what the typical rates are.

Media simply costs far too much right now, no matter how you slice it. It's why people gravitate towards the streaming models, but we really need to work out the pricing structure. Our musicians deserve to be able to live comfortably if they produce inspiring or entertaining art - and the people whose job is just to deliver that art, should be making their cut on the sheer volume of transactions, not slurping up every penny from EVERY transaction.

Some argue that we need to let the 'free market' decide. Fine, give us free information so we can make informed decisions.
