Rob's comments make perfect sense when we look at how consumers have reacted to other examples of new technology adoption. Consumers have shown time and time again and 'good enough' at a lower price will win out over higher priced 'best technology'. Backward compatibility has also been very important in the past. If that weren't true, we'd all be using OS/2 instead of Windows. If DL technology can allow you to run both HD content and normal DVDs (even better if it improves them) at a fraction of the price of the other two, then that's exactly what people will do. Now, if we can just get that holographic drive ready for market.

This is actually one of the more thoughtful pieces on the whole Blu-Ray vs. HD-DVD fiasco. There are some breakthroughs happening in compression that may allow double layer to be "good enough" technology for HD content until the next great thing.

Say what you want about surveys, but I can tell you from working in Product Marketing for the last 7 or so years that Rob is spot on. Any research can be "cooked" to give the desired outcome.

The only thing I would disagree with is Rob's opinion of optical as a storage medium. I'll agree that it's not the best medium for backup, but it is the most stable for long-term archive. I've had way too many hard drives fail and would never bet on any tape format lasting more than a few years.

Brian,

I think you sound like an idiot who is constantly looking for flaws in others. The last few pieces Rob has written on Apple have been positive to say the least. Learn to spell too. If you are an Apple zealot, you certainly are not helping your cause, or representing your "group" very well.

I think Rob's been right on several occassion. For example his prediction about them moving to Intel based processors.

Rob's a total hypocrite....

he constantly bashes Apple and uses "Survey's" for that all the time, but here he writes:

"The Blu-ray folks circulated a survey last month, concluding that Blu-ray would win because consumers would prefer it. It was flawed, as most surveys are, by not taking into account the world as it likely will exist at that time. Surveys, in general, are a poor predictor of future behavior (if surveys were accurate predictors, the Ford Edsel, according to the most massive research of its time, should have been a resounding success)."

now it's confirmed that i cannot respect this guy at all....

I think Rob hit it on the head with his prediction. It really doesn't matter which format is better, if their distribution numbers are outdone by a competitor. HD-DVD really needs Microsoft to incorporate their format into the Xbox 360 in order to compete. Like the iPod, Sony will be targeting young (18-34) early adopters with their PS3, and once the fad/trend takes off, Blu-Ray will have one.
