From personal experience I would say that you're almost always better off buying a Mac. My five-plus year old iMac still looks brand new and runs the latest OS, in fact I am looking forward to running Leopard on it when it's released. Ahem, I beg to differ. 1) Apple HAS been forthcoming on the shutdown issue; their suggestion is easy to find in the support section of their web site. 2) The fix seemed to work for me. It does NOT involve a performance hit. The firmware update basically tells the fan to blow a little more often. So maybe you lose a tiny amount of battery life.
