I don't see how you can say that you're saving 200 bucks by purchasing a PC now. If you wait for Vista then the price won't go up. The odds of pc's going up in price in the spring is something I find hard to believe.

I expect by spring we'll have a faster box for the same or less than what it costs today and I'm betting less (only because that's the way it's been going for the last bunch of years).

My take is if you really need one then by it and get used to stuff changing..
It's probably best to wait no matter what platform you're using. From personal experience I would say that you're almost always better off buying a Mac. My five-plus year old iMac still looks brand new and runs the latest OS, in fact I am looking forward to running Leopard on it when it's released. Whereas the Dells at work are usually long gone after a few years of use

So "wait on Apple"; don't wait on Windows? Ahem, I beg to differ. 1) Apple HAS been forthcoming on the shutdown issue; their suggestion is easy to find in the support section of their web site. 2) The fix seemed to work for me. It does NOT involve a performance hit. The firmware update basically tells the fan to blow a little more often. So maybe you lose a tiny amount of battery life. I can live with that.

As for Vista: it isn't even UNIX-based. It's at least 15 years behind the curve, technologically speaking. And it sounds like it is also a resource-hog. Why, exactly, would anybody be dumb enough to buy a Vista-loaded PC when you can buy an Intel Mac and (if needed) a copy of Windows and get TWO OS's essentially for the price of one, on the same machine? Then, you can spend most of your time in OS X and still run that awful little Windows-only spreadsheet macro the accounting department makes everybody use, at native speed, when required!
