THIS has always been my question! However, IMHO very little of surround sound is authored for a "realistic" sound. It appears to me, emphasis is placed on making the viewer "FEEL" impact with direction and focus taking a back seat.

Authoring surround sound becomes almost impossible if the goal is to create an authentic listening experience because we just don't hear like that. That being said, what then should the goal be when authoring?

Great to hear debate, I am just in the process of building a home theartre dedicated room and going the 6.1/7.1 way. It may not be the better option, we will see. One thing I have noticed is the room shape /design makes a big difference. If you have a square room and you are sitting on the back wall, I would say 6.1/7.1 wouldn't add to the listening experience, but a long room may. I have heard in demostration rooms 6.1 sounding fantastic, as helecopters fly over, the back speaker really gives the feeling its coming from behind you, which a 5.1 can't do! Saying all this I would suggest Quality over quantity if money is limited. The problem with more channels is more speakers and good speakers COST!! So better to have less quality speakers than more crap speakers anytime.

For hundreds of dollars I would just find another 2 channel power amp like the hitachi HMA 8300 that I had in the past. 200 watts per channel RMS and peaked at 400 to 600, or wherever your speakers would blow. It was great and two channels was all you could stand! Mind you that this would power a good sized theater, and I had it in a 9x12 bedroom. A word to the wise: I can't hear worth a damn anymore! Keep that in mind. The sound that you find on a 5.1 system is about all a person needs if it is a good system, but if you are trying to make up for a low end system by turning it up - as was stated before the clipping will kill you. If you are trying to make a averaged size listening enviorment really sound good without the ear damage - 5.1 is the way to go. If you just like playing with a lot of wires and stuff - go for it, 6.1, 7.1. 8.1 etc.

If you have a large room, I think 7.1 does sound better to me than 5.1. I have 7.1 in a 18 x 22' Den. I wouldn't say it is a HUGE difference (not worth hundreds of dollars), but if you have +5' behind your listening position and your receiver already supports it, you should definitely try it out. I definitely do hear a much more detailed sound. I have had 5.1 for 9 months and 7.1 for the last month. Now if more Blu-Ray DVDs released would just support 7.1.

Here is a great site for tracking 7.1 released movies...
<a href="<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Stats.php?OrderBy=ReleaseDate&Audio=7.1"">http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Stats.php?OrderBy=ReleaseDate&Audio=7.1" rel="nofollow">http://www.blu-raystats.com/Stats/Stats.php?Ord...

I just got a Pioneer Elite SC-07 recently. Bought a set of Boston Acoustics HD-7 and HD-5 boxes then added some old Bose boxes I had for 2 of the channels.
Wow, this is such a big difference from 5.1. I am glad I made the switch. I know only Start Wars and maybe a few other movies are in THX but they sound Awesome!

well i like sound and after just adding a blue-ray drive to my pc i noticed that the even the blue-ray movies Ive purchased and rentend only have 5.1 now my computer can handle 7.1 but again as you said its pretty much needless. i do game and well 7.1 would be nice more range of where things are coming at ya. but again im not going to go out and buy an expensive 7.1 system for my tiny ass room. especially when i play movies on my pc its really not going to make it sound any better since there not really using 7.1. so i've made up my mind and im going to go get a decent 5.1 system since ill be using it for gaming and movies dose any one have any suggestions?

I have a 7.1 surround sound home theater room that is 12x14 and if I put it on 5.1 mode it doesn't sound as good. The extra back channels fill the room with more sound. If you by better quality equipment you won't get problems with overheating and low quality sound at higher volumes. I went with 2 TSI500 (front), 4 VM10's (side and rear), subwoofer is a PSW125, and one CS2 (Center channel). My reciever is pioneer VSX-01TXH and is in pioneer's high end series. This reciever is a great solution to overheating. I recomend this setup for good sound quality and a great home theater sound experience.

I have a 7.1 Yamaha AV Receiver setup for the home theater is 5.1 and will continue to do just that.

I had realized some time back that I was happy with 5.1 even when I play Blue Ray disks with 7.1 and borrowed extra speakers from a mate to test at home.

INSTEAD of 7.1 setup I have gone 5.1 + used the extra channels to Bi-Amp the front speakers. Sounds great be happy guys... :-)

I have a 7.1 amp, but I don't think I'd use anything above five channels unless my room was somewhere close to 100 cubic metres.

5.0 > 4.1 ! I'd rather have a center channel than a subwoofer any day.

SDDS in cinemas - yeah, good when you get it. But I saw Bond last week in an SDDS cinema, and they played the Dolby trailer beforehand, which can only mean that they played a Dolby version of the movie.
If I have a 5.1 speaker system and play a movie in blue ray, does it automatically play it in my speakers as 5.1 or how does it work? Also, I am confused about av receivers and the signal they receive. Lets say I have a yamaha rx-v1800 (7.1), it has all kinds of different formats. If I watch cable tv and the channel isn't hd, will my receiver still make it play in 7.1 or 5.1 regardless? Or does the source going through my receiver have to be in that format already? This is all so confusing for me I wish there was a website that broke all this down barney style.

I am considering upgrading my receiver from 5.1 to 7.1 but continue using my 5.1 speakers for now. Could that be a problem? My close friend builds star tour buses and he said they had to put in 7.1 due to the blue-ray players. He said it would play but was not compatible. On a million dollar bus everything had to be perfect. Any Comment?

I went straight from basic stereo headphones to 7.1 surround sound. I use it on my computer, which is what I watch all my movies off of, play all my pc games off of, and even run optical audio through from my xbox into my pc. I can say that the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 while watching movies is quite minimal, though the difference is definitely still there, but when gaming on 7.1, that exact sound location makes all the difference of survival.

Regarding your question. From my knowledge of surround sound. And more over the difference between 5.1 and 7.1 functionality.

I believe that, if you had a 7.1 setup, but was watching say for example a dvd that had a 5.1 soundtrack, the sound would be output from the speakers to the very rear. Not to the speakers (Pointing at your ears)

Hope this helps. Tell me if im wrong : ]

Hi guys!
I really enjoyed reading the article and replies. Thank you! However, I have one question regarding the 7.1->5.1 backwards compatibility. If I setup my speakers according to 7.1 scheme and listen a 5.1 source I assume that the rear surround speakers will not be used and only surround speakers (pointed at my ears) will be used. However, according to 5.1 requirements rear surround speakers should be behind a person, not perpendicular to his head.

Thank you for an answer!

(sorry for my English)

This article was written years ago. And certainly as of this year, with all the hype over the Blu-Ray and HD DVD formats over, theatre systems have certainly come along way.

With Blu-Ray winning by a wide margin, and with movie companies favoring the format, this is certainly an exciting time for surround sound.

5.1 has been for many years been the norm for many if not every dvd release. But obviously with the invention of High def movies, and the capability of 7.1 sound, it makes sense that obviously this is the next stage in home entertainment.

It happened with music too. Cassettes, vinyl, and obviously cd coming out on top.

And the same with video, including video cassettes, dvd, and now High Def dvd'.

And obviously with the new HD format, you get better sound too. You get to be even more immersed in the sound that films bring.

So i would recommend moving with the age were in. A digital revolution. We are seeing it in Digital Cinema, and now obviously we get to have that in the consumer market also.

7.1 set up is the way to go, but obviously, unless the price of receivers and speakers as a package or sold separately come down, and if the systems and their capabilities are explained to the people who become confused with the technical stuff, i think it will ultimately always be people with 7.1 Blu-Ray surround set ups, vs. people with 5.1 dvd.

Thats the choice we have. Im gonna go figure for a bit, and wait for prices to come down, and for the market to become much clearer with any luck.

You have to remember that this article was written in Feb '06 and what amazes me is that things are just starting to pick up for 7.1 surround sound. As stated above, the next gen video game systems has things that support it and many of them have to have the latest HDMI capabilites to run it. Still, I don't see where I have space behind my couch (which is against the wall) to put the two rear speakers. I just ordered a 7.1 system, but I will most likely be using only 5 speakers and a sub.

When it came time to decide on upgrading my A/V receiver, the cutter was interconnecting all my components. 7.1 came for very little extra cost for me, so I have it. But I'm still waiting to hear unique sounds out of the back speakers, even from the latest bd releases. Has anyone heard a bd disk that really shows off 7.1?
It's interesting for me to read articles like this wrote by other countries citizens.
I'll tell that people in my country (Ukraine) usualy buy 5.1 home theater all in one box. The brands are most sven F&D and microlab for pc users and sony panasonic for others who have plasma+dvd. And even they bought 5.1 they know that 7.1 is "cool!" and cooler than 5.1 Ask them why and you will hear an unswer like: Wow 7.1 is bigger so cooler! :)
As for me I have Stereo for music and 5.1 for theater. But I think that it is not enoght to buy only audio system and be happy. You also must make your room "softer" to make this system work and your ears listen.
Sorry for my English. Want to tell more but need more English practice. Thanks to the author.

The only time 7.1 matters is with gaming. I had 7.1s around me with an audigy 2 at one point, and games which support a full 7.1 immersive sound are amazing, because as you turn around the voices move around you smoothly. with 5.1 its still pretty nice and the sound still moves around you smoothly, but its a harsher jump at the back since there is no middle speaker. i understand 6.1, it makes sense, 1 middle speaker in the front and 1 middle speaker in the back to make the transition from left/right more smooth in a 3D environment. but what the hell is 7.1? it makes no sense to have 4 speakers in the back and 3 in the front. quite simply they should have began with 4.1, then moved on to adding a center speaker front and rear (6.1), and then adding center speakers to your left and right (8.1) for the maximal surround sound. But the world works in strange and RETARDED ways, and we are stuck with 5.1 which is acceptable, 6.1 which is the most logical but least supported type, and an idiotic 7.1 option which makes no sense. thank you human race, you have outdone yourself yet again.

I must admit I have a 7.1 system but I have a valid reason. I had a bad lightning strike on my home and it blew out my tuner despite my Monster SP. I recieved a check in the mail from Monster for all of the blown out componets and got a great deal on an Onkyo 7.1 with true 80 watts per channel. No Clipping in this household!! I have it set up and it sounds great in 7.1 Now to just get those media chair sets without my wife noticing

With BluRay and HD-DVD delivering 7.1 discrete audio with lossless Dolby TrueHD and DTSMA, I'm not sure why people are referring to 7.1 as marketing hype? IMO, this article was well stated at the time (nearly 2 yrs ago) but it doesn't reflect the current tech out there.

I bought a 6.1 system because it provided the best performance for the cost. The sixth speaker has been in a drawer since I bought it--and there it shall remain. All my friends comment on how amazing movies sound on my system. I've never bothered to tell them about my "spare".

I fully agree! 5.1 is by far the best solution for anyone setting up a theater for the first time. Do not get involved in the hype that 7.1 is generating.
