Good point, Ronny. While features are getting packed more and more, I also think that products are engineered to have shorter lifespans than before (e.g. 3 years of operational stability instead of 5-7 years). Then consumers will have little choice but to buy a new product every 3 years or less even if they don't hop on the "latest, coolest, fastest" bandwagon of people who grab the newest product as they come (those who can afford to that is). Many computer or gadget displays start showing BODs and flicker and dim in 3 years or so in my experience. That' s one of many possible hardware breakdowns. Companies cough out incremental upgrades like Ronny said and when you tally up the amount spent over the years upgrading every 1 or 2 years or so, it's not really saving much money, if any. Not to mention salaries have increased little over the years. In the end it's still lots of inflation and little product longevity. Looks like everything's bound for the trash sooner nowadays. And what a huge pile it may become.

I kind of feel like the CE industry is taking the "baby steps" approach to their products. Sure, prices are down, but people are upgrading more often. The jumps in technology for these product lines are getting smaller and smaller. People are getting new TVs every few years instead of every 7-10 years.
