I purchased the m17x with all top of the line upgrades. At a cost of 6000.00 Can. Within the first two months, I got a rattling fan, a dead pixel on the screen, the sense bar failed, and the worst is yet to come... The laptop seemed to perform poorly. After testing , the same tests that Alieware performs on burn-in, it was shown to run 1/10 slower than quoted performance of it's own tests.

This was now my second time calling Dell/Alienware tech. support, First they were going to ship back my laptop because of the dead pixel, then not, then a technician would come over to replace my motherboard, but now they were not going to do anything about the dead pixel. Support can't even get its own story straight between phone calls.

These calls summarize at least 2hrs of talking and testing on the phone with a tech support agent.

Then I made the dreadful mistake of looking up m17x problems on google...

I find out they send old refurbished motherboards when a system gets repaired, so I call tech support about this issue, he couldn't tell me either way if a refurbished motherboard would be used or not.. so I said: if a technician shows up here with that I will send him home packing.. and I will ship my entire unit back.

In closing all I can say is buyer beware of Alienware.

The keys look nice from this distance… I'd have dell studio but Alienware M17x gives better performance. Intel Core 2 Extreme Quad QX9300 2.53 GHz with dual 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 280M GPU makes it more powerful. Just ordered mine, can't wait for it to get here. I went for the same specs you listed with a few changes:

Quad core
1TB - 2x 500gig - Raid 0

Now I have to start buying some games to see what this thing can do.

I'm going to order one soon myself ^_^ im soo excited about it getting max everything. this is going to beat the crap out of the desktop i built myself. i mean i know in my heart that i could build a better desktop.. but i cant run around with my desktop and i do alot of running.. sound like a great laptop cant wait to get my hands on it and show it off to family and friends. also going to pick up a g13 gameing board for it hehe.. finally i'll be able to play games without putting everything on low x.x

I will be ordering a system from them: for $2,600: Core DUO 2.53 Ghz, 4GBs, Dual 280M video cards, this will beat out 90% of the laptops and desktop PCs. This is a great price too for a notebook like this.
As far as going green, go paint your own PC green and stop preaching your envro mantra.

I ordered my M17x a couple of days ago. I configured it with the QX9300 processor, 8 gig of 1333mhz ram, 280M in SLI, and two SSD's 256 gig in raid 0. I enjoy playing the latest games and since I'm away from home quite a bit, this rig will fit my needs. Hard to have a green cake and eat it too.

Just read this article and it adds to my confidence in Alienware. I just ordered a M17X in the Special Edition, Nebula Red. It now is displayed on their web site. I ordered the 9 series quad processor and dual 1GB GTX 280M graphics cards. I'm sure the Red visual is going to be an eye popper. Due to some policy stuff, this item has to be ordered through Dell. I ws not aware of this. As for green pros, I support the environment, but some things can't occur in green.

I just ordered an M17x. Starting June 26th, 2009 (which has already passed), all orders coming from Alienware that have Vista come with a free upgrade to Windows 7 when it's released in October. I believe the system comes with an upgrade redemption form and Microsoft will simply send you the disc in the mail.

Did you get a chance to test out the videocam above the screen?
