Ian, it creates two video files one for watching on large screens and the other for things like phones. The files are MPEG-4 using an H.264 codec and AAC stereo encoding.

The reason you use a seperate server is to isolate the activity and keep power use down. You could use a dedicated PC but it would use more power, you'd need to leave a monitor connected to it, and remote access would be risky and problematic. (Getting remote access without opening the thing up to attack would be somewhat difficult and might break when you patched).

A server is a device dedicated to providing file access, doesn't need a monitor (you access it remotely for everything), and generally pulls a fraction of the power a PC does (no graphics for instance).

Why would someone want a separate media server when they can just dedicate one of their PCs to storage and leave that on? Is it because of power consumption? I agree, form <a href="<a rel="nofollow" href="http://www.papatek."">http://www.papatek." title="<a rel="nofollow" href="www.papatek."">www.papatek." target="_blank" ref="nofollow">www.papatek.

What format does the transcoder on the HP mediasmart server put your files into? I assume it will transcode them into WMA or WMV because its a Microsoft OS? It would be great to be able to tell it the settings you want.
We use the Apple TimeCapsule for my wife's iMac and it is pretty cool. Backups are done hourly and we can add more storage to it etc. It's a really useful device.
