yup the internet can only work as fast as your computer, if you’ve got supposedly “fast” internet and a slow computer…you have slow internet. i suggest using ccleaner and defraggler on a regular basis….or have a techy friend to run them for you.

I would put the 70,000 bridges President Obama mentioned higher on the list, too. But I don't believe we have to choose one or the other. There's money already allocated to Internet expansion and improvement that just needs to be spent more wisely. It's not enough money, for sure. But that's at least a place to start.

I should also add that by investing in this type of high-speed Internet service, there will be less need for bridges in general because those speeds make telecommuting so much more of a rich, real experience that doing so could become more widespread, as it has at various universities where this kind of speed already exists.

Anyway – you're right. Fixing crumbling bridges should be a higher priority.

It does. Even FiOS in America lags behind other services. I pay $40 a month for 15Mb FiOS, which isn’t terrible by American standards, but is WAY worse than a lot of other countries.

There is no resource that is being saved by capping. Their justification is that you will use less bandwidth for the month, to remain under the cap and cause less bottle necking. To which I say, tough. Upgrade your antiquated network, and move on.

Upon setting up my replacement Netgear xDSL modem from AT&T, a little notice was shoved in my box informing me that my “unlimited” service was now capped @ 150GB… an HD quality streaming movie from Netflix can be 5GB along.. granted.. trying to watch 30 movies a month via Netflix would be a pretty daunting task for me.. BUT STILL!?!

The main advantage these companies have over local governments is the governments lack of technology knowledge. I feel like they simply rollover instead of demanding that Comcast or Verizon give them faster speeds for their city.

And most city places with free WiFi suck. They are slow, over-saturated and/or simply do not work. Yet if you do some digging, you find out that the local governments are paying millions for the WiFi to be implemented - and at slow speeds. They are simply being taken advantage of.

Someone needs to step in and fix this.

Makes sense Andrew. Investing in our country’s infrastructure is always a good thing, although I am betting people would put the 70,000 crumbling bridges President Obama mentioned in the SOTU higher on the priority list. But I do think your larger point is valid.
