I think you hit something here that a lot of people dont think about:

Apple's are not hardware upgradeable. Now, you can upgrade the memory, hard drive and dvd-rom drive, but I'm talking about upgrading the motherboard. Upgrading the graphics card. Upgrading the sound card.

You can't do this. Now granted, that means the stability of OS X is higher because you dont have to worry about a bunch of different drivers, but it does lock you into your machine. If you want the latest and greatest video card out there, you wont be able to get it.

It wont be an issue if you go out and buy a mac today, but in 3 years, do you really want to go upgrade to the latest and greatest mac and spend another $2000, or do you want to be able to just replace the video card in your current PC?

Flexibility is what comes with owning a windows based PC IMHO.

I've been running WINDOWS for years.. and just recently came to the conclusion that APPLE is just better.

Having been fooled with Windows 95 and how easy it was to pirate GAMES & APPZ for the OS, in my youth. I stopped taking them seriously as a “SOFTWARE” company after Windows ME crashed my PC and MS didn't see the need to issue any updates (and thats just an understatement)… and I didn't take XP seriously til SP2.

I currently have an old IBM ThinkPad running Windows XP SP2. I recently bought a Macbook PRO to retire my old G4 tower. My Macbook PRO runs LINUX/XP(SP2)/MAC OS X simultaneously under Parallels) including the VERY SAD Vista RC 1/via Bootcamp. Needless to say VISTA is no MAC OS X killer. Its a very very sad imitation that smacks of being designed by committee (and I'm going to uninstall it soon).

Again, Brett, quantity doesn't always lead to quality. Just because a PC might run that extra version of Solitaire, or COREL DRAW to me doesn't really add up to much, to be honest with you. Macs have all the quality titles and they run brilliantly under MAC OS X. I can't say the same for XP or VISTA. Window's can't even run WORD well, and VISTA is not even close to XP's useability.

But sure, if you want to call Apple a loser because they don't release and OS every FIVE YEARS! or own the monopoly which has basically crippled the PC Industry and its manufacturers, or if you want to make fun of them because MACS can now run WINDOWS & LINUX via BOOTCAMP.. or that they can now run even faster then WINDOWS PCs
with INTEL CHIPS, then go ahead..

I'll let Apple handle its OWN PR and I'll just enjoy running every conceivable program out there, while you go and get that DELL, dude.

But i still have to give apple a lot of credit here because they truely fit the need for many audio and video professionals. A couple of my buddys swear by their macs because yes, out of the box they tend to be very stable. Playing music from a mac live is popular for that reason. apple has amazing video editing apps and Logic is awesome, but to me thats not enough. My argument is that you can now do the same thing with the same stability, but on a much cheaper pc. Plus you get access to all the other things not available with mac, like about a million pieces of great software. personally, i think looks are great but they don't last. I don't really like staring all day at hardware in awe of it's looks (unless it's a monitor) why would you want to be bound to an overpriced and mostly uncustomizable machine, when you can basically create a completely unique hardware and software environment based on your needs. just takes a little effort, and a lot less money. I recently ran a modified build of xp that was 200mb in size and performed faster and with more functionality than any version of OSX i've used. And once we've all spent some time understanding and tweaking vista a bit, the same core concepts will apply. All i'm saying is that I think far more is possible with PC, overall. I won't even get started with networking either, it's just not fair. I need to save some energy anyway for answering some unhappy responses

Secondly, my wife does own an iMac (and I had one too). One Apple in the house is good enough. Really, though I get a kick out of you calling me an MS fanboy, when you are bleeding apple juice so to speak.

I really think that if you line up the pros and cons of a Vista machine versus a OSX machine, that Vista would kick the snot out of it. From a consumer standpoint, more software to choose from, more hardware components to choose from, more games to choose from, the systems are easier to upgrade, it's compatible with most business machines and 93%+ of the machines out there are Windows machines.

I think you just lost, but I appreciate your enthusiam. Apple may have won when it comes to MP3 players, but they certainly have lost on the PC side.

BTW, I love seeing Apple use Intel CPU's, and BootCamp….It just goes to show how much they are losing this battle. :)

I've made my bread & butter running a MAC for seven years strong. So your ignorant statement saying how you can't do anything on a MAC just isn't true. Its one of the first computers that orginally supported Microsot WORD. So what are you smoking?

Also in regards to there being more software Applications for the PC than the Mac. Its true Mac OS X can't run some of the games available on the PC, but it still has the best selling game titles available and for what the MAC lacks in Game titles, you can always dual boot in Bootcamp to play your favourite games in XP or VISTA as well as run other appz.

Quantity doesn't always add up to quality. And I've seen the extra Software appz available for the PC and not on the Mac and there just not quality programs. Adobe Appz, 3D Appz even OFFICE, just works better on a MAC.

Because if you did you would also realize that you can also dual boot Windows Vista to run natively via Bootcamp on any Intel iMac as well. Unfortunately the Dell XPS your considering won't be able to run OS X so how is buying a Dell XPS a better choice?

With Vista, it looks good but of course supports an infinite ammount of programs and games. So far I am very impressed with it.

Going to sell my iMac on eBay and get a new Dell XPS personally.

Why would Apple systems want to run Vista? OSX has had all of Vista's “new” features for years, and games will still run in XP (which can be easily booted via BootCamp) just fine. Any Apple which is capable of running Vista (i.e. an x86-based one) is also already well above the recommended spec for Vista.

Why is it every week there's an article the buzzwords “iPod Killer” or some variant? Couldn't be because any phrase that attracts viewers, (regardless of factual basis) is acceptable, could it?

Don't get me wrong — I'm using a Kensington keyboard and Microsoft mouse on this old Mac. Functionally, Apple's offerings in this space are more limited. But you've gotta be smoking something to say the Vista keyboard and mouse are better in terms of art. I would not want to see how you would paint your house, etc.

Regarding GUI design, it remains to be seen how well Microsoft will use the Vista eye candy for functional gain. The great thing about OSX is how the eye candy is there, but it's subdued — they don't overdo it.

For example, something like Apple's Expose looks really cool, but it is also extremely useful. I use Expose constantly. Every window is displayed in its entirety and it's easy to understand where each window is coming from in the user space. Compare this to Vista's Flip 3d feature. It looks cooler, but it doesn't give the user nearly as much information; you can only see a fraction of every window under the front. I would almost rather use what it mimicks — Alt-Tab.

Office 2007 is another area where Microsoft is falling short here. Have you seen that 'Office icon' in the upper left corner of the new Office windows? What were they thinking? It sure looks shiny, but I didn't even realize it was clickable until I needed a function I couldn't find in the new 'button-based' interface, and got desperate. Why replace one complicated interface with another? Again, Microsoft could have taken a few pages from Apple's Pages program, which tries to make the word processing interface as transparent as possible (which succeeds in some ways, falls short in others, but definitely seems like a step in the right direction).

I hope for everyone's sake that Microsoft and its 3rd party developers realize this over the coming years. Put those resources to use for the user, because the novelty of having glassy windows is going to wear off within the first few hours.

Did you know that Vista can only support 4 cores. Want to know a rip-off. Wait until Dell et al start selling octuple core machines and people try to get full power out of them with Vista. I've seen the future too and believe me it isn't coming from Microsoft.

I just got my first Apple yesterday; a 5 year old G3 iBook, to see what all the rave is about with the OS X and such. After playing with it for the past few hours I can see where Microsoft took Windows XP, combined OS X features to it, and called it Vista. I'm a PC guy myself and love my Win XP machine. But Apple does have a better design on their side.

Maybe once Apple gets more than just 2% of the world market share with computers, maybe then I'll hit up my local Apple store for a MacBook. Untill then I think Win XP and Vista are worth sticking to.
