We have talked about the value of the three consoles here in the office and it seems like everyone here agrees that Microsoft (and Nintendo to some extent) have done a great job creating the illusion of value with their consoles. Sony seems to give the consumer too much credit. How so? Let me explain:

At first glance, the Xbox appears to be cheaper by at least $100 to $200 dollars depending on the configuration. But then once you add the WiFi adapter, rechargeable batteries (and the charger base to charge them) etc you still wind up in the same ball park as the PS3. But, keep in mind that not everyone will want the rechargavle batteries or the Wifi adapter. So maybe Sony should have introduced a stripped down PS3 in the beginning that included controllers without a rechargeable battery, no WiFi out of the box etc. People seems to like the ala carte approach here.

The PS3 slim seems to be a little too late to the market. I am sure it will help Sony with garnering new customers when compared to the other console manufacturers at this point, but no one with an existing PS3 will want it, and only those waiting for prices to drop will be attracted to it.

Personally, I am glad I bought the PS3 when it first came out. I have my media card reader, a decently sized hard drive and PS2 compatibility.

Author writes:

"[Wii] appeared to generate more profit than Sony and Microsoft combined."

This is very cute, given that both Microsoft and Sony are losing money at this time. So, even if Wii lost, let's say one million, it would still 'generate more profit than Sony and Microsoft combined'. In fact, by reselling one game, I generated more profit that Microsoft and Sony combined.

How about that?
