Take a fresh look at Monolith Productions’ Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor in this new “Weapons and Runes” trailer from publisher Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. The October 7 release sets players loose in a multi-region, open world take on Mordor, with protagonist Talion — a ranger imbued with the powers of of Wraith (like the Nazgul) — pursuing Sauron on his home turf.
Shadow of Mordor is set between the events of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, but it draws heavy inspiration from the fiction. Talion carries three powerful weapons — a long sword, a dagger, and a bow — all of which have their own names, identities, and histories. Like Glamdring, Anduril, and Sting, these weapons help to paint a clearer picture of the man wielding them. The trailer takes a closer look at the game’s Runes system, which allows players to personalize their weapons using powerful magic inscriptions dropped by downed boss enemies.
In somewhat related news, WBIE also revealed a set of retailer-specific pre-order bonuses which — surprise, surprise — are all Runes. Amazon pre-orders include the Deadly Archer Rune, which boosts headshot damage on Sauron’s Captains (mini-bosses, essentially); Best Buy pre-orders include the Flame of Arnor Rune, which rewards a high combo count with an ignited blade that can incinerate enemies; GameStop pre-orders include a “Captain of the Watch” character skin as well as the Hidden Blade Rune, which deals extra damage for pulling off stealth attacks on Captains; finally, Steam pre-orders include the Orc Slayer Rune, which applies bonus damage to any Captains struck by a special attack.
Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is set to launch worldwide on October 7 for PlayStation and Xbox consoles, as well as Windows-equipped PCs.
