Ford's Start concept car melds the practicality of a compact car with upmarket features and design.
Small doesn’t have to mean cheap. So goes the thinking behind Ford’s latest concept car: the Start. Despite B-car dimensions similar to the Fiesta, exterior designer Jeff Nield tried to give the Start a stature and presence with features more befitting to a larger luxury car, like a high beltline that makes passengers feel safer and clever rear taillights that sweep around the side to make the rear end look wider than it really is.
The interior also makes clever use of space with seats that slide on a slim monorail track, making the floor seem bigger and less cluttered than with dual-rail systems. An unconventional dash blends donut-like analog gauges with a digital display in the center, offering the smooth action and intuitive feel of sweeping needles with the flexibility of an LCD.
Although Ford has no plans to produce the Start concept, don’t be surprised to see some of its most innovative features creeping into other Ford cards. The 1.0-liter three-cylinder EcoBoost powerplant is already destined for production – although we doubt you’ll see it with the quirky space-age bezel seen on the Start.
