Legroom for days: Infiniti’s 2015 Q70L is longer than before … but less hybrid-y

Infiniti revealed the updates to its Q70 sedan (formerly the M37, M56, and M35h) today at the New York Auto Show, and thanks to the addition of a new long-wheelbase model, the car is more spacious than ever.

All Q70 models receive updated styling, front and rear, but the new Q70L model also gains 5.9 inches to the wheelbase, moving the Q70 into full-size luxury sedan territory.

The Q70 has been the darling of Infiniti lineup since its redesign in 2011, thanks to its bold, curvaceous design, upscale interior (especially with silver-polished wood), and exciting driving dynamics. The longer wheelbase not only adds extra room for the rear passengers, but should also help create an even more planted, refined ride for driver and passengers alike.

The engine lineup for traditional Q70 sedans goes unchanged with the 3.7-liter V6, 5.6-liter V8, and 3.5-liter V6 hybrid drivetrains. However, long-wheelbase models will not launch with the hybrid option for the first model year.

The Q70 – and M37 before it – fits into the same segment as the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and Lexus GS. Many of Infiniti’s competitors offer proper full-size sedans, a la the 7 Series, S-Class, and LS, but the Q70 will be the first model in its class to offer a long-wheelbase option. We’re not sure yet whether this is Infiniti’s solution to getting a larger sedan on the market quickly or not, but we do know that there have been rumors of a larger car coming, and soon.
