Raging bull in a fire suit: Lamborghini Huracán LP620-2 Super Trofeo revealed

After an online leak yesterday, the racing version of Lamborghini’s latest supercar is here.

The Lamborghini Huracán LP620-2 Super Trofeo was unveiled today at The Quail: A Motorsport Gathering, an event coinciding with the 2014 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.

This raging bull debut next year in all three (Europe, North America, and Japan) regional iterations of the one-make Lamborghini Blancpain Super Trofeo series, so Lambo won’t have to worry about any humiliating losses to rivals for the time being.

The Huracán certainly looks great in racing trim. Modifications include a 10-position rear wing, front and rear diffusers, and adjustable air intakes.

There are mechanical changes, of course, and they’re all spelled out in car’s name. While the stock Huracán is an LP610-4, with the 610 (metric) horsepower and all-wheel drive, the Super Trofeo’s 5.2-liter V10 gets a slight power bump to 620 hp, and ditches all-wheel drive for rear-wheel drive.

Lamborghini also treated the Super Trofeo to a full-on racecar weight-reduction program. It should weigh around 2,800 pounds in fighting trim, compared to around 3,135 pounds for a stock Huracán. Performance figures weren’t released, probably because of the number of expletives they inspire.

The entire package was created with input from Gian Paolo Dallara and his eponymous company, Dallara Engineering.

Dallara’s involvement with Lamborghini dates back to 1963, while his company has designed scores of successful racecars.

Historically, Lamborghini itself hasn’t been too involved in racing, but the Blancpain Super Trofeo series is changing that.

Maybe down the road we’ll see the Huracán LP620-2 make the transition to other forms of racing, as its Gallardo predecessor did, and compete with racing versions of its rivals’ supercars. Or maybe it will inspire a street-legal Huracán Superleggera.
