We know you’re still sad about Polaroid, but no amount of crying will bring them and their instant cameras back. Yes, Polaroid still exists, but the new company is a different version of its former self. You can pay homage to the old camera pioneer, though, with the Carbon One Mini, a small replica of the Polaroid SX-70 One Step that actually works.
Made by the Hong Kong-based design firm Carbon, the One Mini not only looks like the original Polaroid, it features the rainbow stripe under the lens. OK, it’s not going to fool anyone into thinking it’s a real One Step, but the One Mini’s retro housing contains a modern 5-megapixel digital camera with support for MicroSD memory up to 32GB. There’s a viewfinder for you to look through, but the camera handles autofocusing (from 1.2 meters and beyond). PetaPixel has posted a few image samples.
What it won’t do, however, is churn out instant prints like the iconic Polaroid cameras of yore. Those looking for instant gratification will want to tote along a printer, as the One Mini is compatible with any PictBridge printer. The plus side is you won’t have to shake it like a Polaroid picture to dry, and the One Mini lets you shoot with the signature white border frame that made them so famous.
