DSLRs definitely offer much better quality and give the user much more control, but they’re probably not the answer for someone just looking for “facebook” shots.

The DSLRs are awesome for close-ups, like taking pictures of flowers, insects, etc too.

Point and shoots, to me, are for people who don't want to mess around with settings, lenses, etc. Just point and shoot.

I've helped several friends buy new cameras, and my advice has been:

If you want something convenient, to carry around and use all the time, a high megapixel point and shoot is for you. But be prepared to crop and edit the photos once you upload them to your computer.

If you plan on taking artistic or action photos, and from a distance, you want a DSLR. But you need to take time with each shot.
