DXG USA Announces DXG-506V Camcorder

New digital camcorder, due to be available later this month, combines the functions of a camcorder, digital camera, MP3 player, voice recorder and PC camera.

DXG USA, a maker of digital cameras, yesterday announced a new five-in-one hybrid digital camcorder. The DXG-506V, which the company says is already “heavily pre-ordered”, will be available later this month.

The DXG-506V, according to DXG USA, combines a MPEG-4 video camcorder, 5.1-megapixel digital still camera, MP3 player, voice recorder and PC camera into a device about the size of a bar of soap. This camcorder is the successor to the company’s 305V and sports a much larger 5.1 megapixel sensor, a larger LCD screen, the ability to take full-motion VGA (640×480) video and the ability to record in AVI, MOV and ASF formats.

Other features of the new DXG-506V include an expandable SD card slot for up to two hours of video recording with a 2GB SD card, 12 white balance settings and 4 still image settings (1MP, 3MP, 5MP, and 12MP using firmware interpolation), 32MB of onboard memory and USB 2.0 support.

“The DXG-506V addresses one of the hottest imaging trends right now, which is having a single device that captures full-motion video as well as high-resolution photos,” said Jeff Hansen, Director of Marketing for DXG USA, in a statement. “And unlike MiniDV camcorders, the DXG-506V makes it incredibly easy to transfer video files to a computer for emailing or editing by simply removing the SD card and inserting it into a computer. Couple that ease-of-use with a design small enough to fit it in the back pocket of your jeans, and you can understand why this camera is attracting so much interest.”

  2. Poplmon at 6:41pm 21st August 2009 I have had many of these issues but I resolved (most) of these. The issue still being found out is MP3. I read that you do the same thing to putvideos/pictues in. Hook up the USB cord to a USB port on the BACK of the CPU. Turn on the camera. Select 'Mass Storage'. pen MP3 file. I tried that but it went terrible. Everything I had recorded and saved was gone. To download MP3 music, you need MP3 music in a file. Not Playlist.
  3. judbgrdmchn at 6:49pm 13th December 2008 Can the 506v be used with a tripod?

  10. carol Hall at 6:45pm 28th April 2008 I have a DXG digital video camera model 305v and I lost the instructions, can anyone help? Thanks. This is the first digital camera we have tried.
  11. Michelle Ress at 6:54pm 17th April 2008 I need to know what the down button on the ring around the shutter button does in movie mode. It flashes a triangle on the monitor with either 3 or 6 dots in it like a rack of pool balls. What is that all about? Otherwise I like the camera.

A tripod mount can be added like this one:
    http://www.flickr.com/photos/safoocat/2049998851/i...
that I made for my vistaquest vq1005, basically a piece of wood with a nut in it having the same thread as a tripod.

It will be more challenging to mount on the 506v but it can be done I'm sure.

  14. J Goek at 8:40pm 31st March 2008 Don't buy this horrible camera. Horrible results and not easy to use. It's price is cheap for a reason.
  15. Bella at 10:40pm 23rd January 2008 This is one of the worse cameras I've ever used. I bought it mainly for a high quality webcam and I've spent 6 hours with their horrible instructions and software. I finally had to uninstall all my other video programs and then finally got it to install only to have the picture be so dark I can't use it for a webcam. I have all the lights on and brought other lights in and adjusted all the settings.

I'm really bummed out I got so ripped.
  16. Mary T at 3:26pm 12th January 2008 Camera was working fine. Now the LCD display lights up when turning the camera on, but it is a solid white light with nothing displaying. Any thoughts? Anyone?
  17. Dorothy L. Gragg at 4:45pm 4th January 2008 I am having a terrible problem taking pictures indoors, why? Also,I am holding the camera as still as I can but the hand is always there. I agree that the instructions are awful. You can see the pictures in the manual. Please help me to take better pictures!
  18. Lori at 4:04pm 4th January 2008 Well I got it for christmas and haven't really had any problems, even I added music to it today..I like it!
  19. Bethany at 2:47pm 30th December 2007 Hi, I just received this camera for Christmas . . . frankly, I was initially thinking of returning it, but I just lost my main digital camera (which I'm pretty upset about) and so I'm wondering if I should just hold on to it. My main concern is that I'm reading from several people that there are low-light problems. I would mostly be filming and taking photographs inside with this camera - should I just return it and put the money towards something better? I mean, I like all the capabilities of this camera, is there a better version? Any advice is appreciated . . .
  20. Keith at 9:28pm 29th December 2007 I just purchased this freaking piece of %#@! and every time I put a 1GB SD card in it, it shuts down. I tried a couple different cards, but it only seem to work with Mega Byte cards. So I took it back to Walmutt and they open a fresh one and it did the same thing. Put in a 1 GB SD card and it locked up... but put in a 128 or 256 MB card and it seems to work find. I even formated the SD card hoping that it would help...But Nooooo! And the dxg website... worthless! Sooo, if someone can give some insight into this great mystery it would be greatly appreciated. freaking piece of %#@!
  21. Patrick at 6:25pm 26th December 2007 Hay i purchased this dxg 506v and i would like to know how can i edit the videos recorded when i put them on the computer, also does having a memory card increase image quality in camera mode and video mode?

Shouldn't the screen automatically turn on when the power is switched on? If anyone has any suggestions please share. Thank you.

  35. Ernie Bornn-Gilman at 1:42pm 16th March 2007 I'm sonsidering buying one of these. It actually got a recommendation as a cool gadget in LIFE mag in my local newspaper.
But the DXG website lists the DXG-505V, not the 506, even though the 506 is more than a year old.
What's the deal? Was there ever really a 505? Are your problems with this worked out?

I mostly need to make stills indoors, if that matters to your comments.

    Thanks.

  38. Jocylen at 12:14pm 27th December 2006 I just got this camera for Christmas, and I agree that the manual is vague. I am having a hard time downloading my MP3 files onto it. Any suggestions?
  39. Doug at 9:55am 27th December 2006 guys if you take a seconfd to read the manual your answers will be answered. such as those about the flash which is explained on a sheet thta comes with the device. And to figure out the reason as to why the cpu wont recognize the camera the manual explains certain drivers that may be neede and youi can always just take out the card a out and put it into a card reader. hope this helps
  40. LisaB at 9:16am 27th December 2006 I got this for my son for x-mas. It started out deleting things fine. Now when you go to delete anything it will freeze up. I thought it might need new batteries already, so I got some good ones, and it is still doing the same thing. I think it is only doing it when he is using the camrcorder not the pictures. Does anyone have any ideas on what to do for this ?
  41. unhappy customer at 2:05pm 25th December 2006 the camera is junk. you get what you pay for. i wont return it because it will be a back up for the next one i buy for my trip to the u.k. suggest you all do the same and spend the extra money
  42. MJ at 9:33pm 20th December 2006 I just posted and meant to spell pictures and I put picytures. I would also like to add that the teeny tiny book that comes with the camera-camcorder is to small to read. Nor Mike and I could make heads or tails from it. Also the flash does not work. Had we known about this very small book and problems with this camera-camcorder we would have not bought it!
  43. MJ at 9:20pm 20th December 2006 Mike and I purchased your DXG model 506V and at one time I could download picyures from it, and now I can not! Can you help?

  45. Daisy Enck at 1:26pm 12th December 2006 This is my first digital/video camera and I can't make heads or tails of the instructions. Because there are people who are first time users/buyers, the instructions should be clearer and in bigger print. I hope to be able to figure it out sooner or later.
  46. Reginald at 10:13am 19th November 2006 My new 506v takes great pix outdoors but leaves a lot to be desired inside using the flash. The flash pix are dark, way to dark and unusable. I cannot find a way to lighten them up. But outside, great. I find the camera awkward to use with the shutter button where it is, hard to not get your finger over the flash. I would not buy this camera again.
  47. Alex at 5:51pm 5th November 2006 lol i ordered this from a catalog and the price was like $280 plus shipping but the mailman left it on my doorstep without me signing for it so i told the catalog company i never got it and i didn't have to pay. so i couldn't beat the price. it's a really nice camera. no complaints except in the catalog it said it came with an ac adapter. the batteries ran out in a week and that was only using it a few times. heres the camera companies site http://www.dxgusa.com/ heres the page with the driver u need http://www.dxgtechusa.com/Support/downloads.html
u dont need all the software. just install the driver and it will work. after u install the driver all u need to do is plug in the usb cable and turn on the camera. you'll then see a small menu on the cameras screen. the choices are Mass Storage, DPS and PC Camera. leave it on Mass Storage and press in the black dial to select that option. u should hear a beep or some kind of noise from your computer letting u know it acknowledged the camera. now if the folder for your camera doesn't open automatically then click on My Computer and u should see an icon for the camera as if it was an external hard drive. it will say NO_NAME (E:). it might have a different drive letter. here's how it looks on my computer http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/9186/untitledha... just click on that and drag and drop or copy and paste things from there to other folders on your computer. i use cut and paste cause if u use copy and paste the pics and videos will still be on the camera. if u cut and paste it removes them from the camera and frees up space. u can even store programs on it if u want. just copy and paste, cut and paste or drag and drop things to and from the camera.

  53. Constance Mele at 9:44am 5th September 2006 I purchased this camera in May from HSC and went to Spain with it, not fully understanding all its functions. I was beginning to appreciate it when it got stolen on the way home from Europe. Shopping for a replacement I quickly learned that other cameras with similar features ran into hundreds more dollars no matter where I looked. It WAS definitely a bargain in terms of its technical abilities compared to price, so I went looking for the exact same camera again. HSC had no more and I finally found one on-line. The replacement model came with an addendum to the original instructions which clarified the flash instructions considerably, as well as the "how to delete" instructions, which had been a mystery. I agree with Beth above; the camera is a great one (and underrated) if you can stick with it long enough to learn its quirks, and the manual is its biggest weakness. Keep trying and you can get some terrific pictures with this little gem. (I admit I have not tried the video mode more than once but the stills are great quality.)

  66. laura at 8:05am 14th July 2006 “What does a lightning symbol mean, a lightning symbol with red around it, symbols with a hand under it?” Quote from Beth

Lightning Symbol means Flash is ON. With Red around it, Flash is OFF. With Hand under it means: Picture might get blurred due to shaking.

Also, to correct BETH’s post, you CAN NOT used a tripod with this camcorder. It does not have a Tripod Mount. Therefore, don’t even count on getting steady shots unless you let it sit on a flat table or something.

This camera is underrated for a reason: it’s cheap.
  67. Beth at 5:48am 10th July 2006 The camera can take some very clear, detailed shots while playing Bryn Terfel or Spanish Renaissance music (nice quality player), and record your next doctor appt. I am convinced the 2 biggest problems are 1) a poorly written instruction manual for novice camera users and 2) the fact that the sun shines on the LCD. Flash (round circular disc around the red dot shows an A with lightning symbol) is great and reloads; take as many as you want. Except with low batteries, it won't take flash or video. What does a lightning symbol mean, a lightning symbol with red around it, symbols with a hand under it? I get the 10 and 20 second self-timers, on menu and in symbols, in addition to tungsten, fluorescent they draw light bulb, but to NOVICES the interpolated? size is not explained (1M,3M,5M,12M--I get that 12 is more detail, can take more 1M pics than 12M pics), set my pics for 'fine' not 'normal', and EV Balance (I go with zero), one can choose sunny or cloudy or go with "auto". Explanations are needed more than the minute (tiny) reductions of the menus in the manual easily found on camera. Manual does explain Zoom: You hit the black circular button for on and off, push up to enlarge pic, push down to reduce pic. You can take pictures with zoom or just look at already taken pics. I'd advise using either macro (close-up) or LD settings (lever/drawings on cam itself) until you've experimented with zoom or interpolated settings. I have a feeling this cam is underrated and does a lot more. Video is pretty good with good voice, mic/speakers on top of camera itself, normal volume on computer; with my 2GB card, I am supposed to get 2 hrs. video. Need a tripod if you want steady video, not for weddings, but nice videos of fountains at malls, bands at parades with audio; it WILL capture you talking (so be quiet). Download DivX player (DXG website has link) if you're getting sound not picture, then it plays with everything. Bar of soap size, good 'fun' camera.
  68. laura at 9:48am 22nd June 2006 I bought this camera for $99. At first, I wanted to return it right away because the picture quality, etc. wasn't all that great. But after messing around with the settings, etc...the pictures are turning out great.
Here are some samples for those who are unsure if this camera is worth it:
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/4ever_sweet...
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/4ever_sweet...
    http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v449/4ever_sweet...

As for Video Quality, you can't expect much from an SD reader. But nonetheless, not too bad. If you want good quality videos, just get a regular camcorder. This is more of a record-at-the-moment.
Transferring to the PC, picture/video/voice record are fine.
The only thing I haven't tried yet, is the webcam.
If this camera should be recommended? I would say YES to Teens and below, NO to adults.
  69. Jill at 5:42am 17th June 2006 I sure have read many negative comments about this product on this digital trends website: any resolutions? I have seen it advertised for 99.97. Sounded like a deal until I found this site. Voice quality any better or even there, picture quality after transfer to PC ????
    Would appreciate any comments.

I found it for $108.00 and was thinking of buying it but I've been reading bad things.

    Has everyone solved their problems?

  75. Lisa M at 7:24am 5th May 2006 Okay guys the flash, you have to be on the camera selection only not the movie, recorder mp3, the roundbutton that surrounds the red take button has 4 arrows NSEW. THe arrow on the right, pointing E, will turn on your flash. on screen will let you know in the top left hand corner. ( make sure when you go to take pic you dont end up covering the flash ( under eye ) by the way your holding your DXG. If your batteries are near dying it will not activate the flash but will flicker a notice to you on the screen, its quick so pay attention. NOW FOR MY Q. I am having issues with my disk loading the progams and also the USB recognizing my camera. I havent been able to find a web site to save my life.
