First look at the next Canon DSLR: 5D Mark III leaks ahead of announcement

canon 5d mark IIIThe Canon 5D Mark III is rumored to be launched in the coming days, but once again the digital camera world has been unable to keep a lid on it and specs and images have leaked. CanonRumors got its hands on a variety of photos showing off the 5D Mark III in all its full-frame glory, which should officially be announced March 2.

Canon announced a slew of new point-and-shoots recently, but has been quiet on the DSLR front for awhile. But hot on the heels of the Nikon D800 comes the 5D Mark III, the next iteration of an incredibly popular series. Here are the purported specifications of the soon-to-be-announced camera:

  • 5d mark III22-megapixel full-frame sensor
  • 61-point AF system
  • 3.2-inch LCD display
  • 100-percent viewfinder
  • Dual CF/SD card slots

It will allegedly cost $3,500. So we still have plenty of questions about the 5D Mark III, mostly concerning speed. There are a lot of good things about the 5D Mark II, but speed wasn’t exactly its biggest strength. Continuous shooting speed is 3.9fps for this camera. The recently announced Nikon D800 shoots 4fps at full resolution, and it’s on the lower end of Nikon’s other speed-friendly DSLRs. It will be interesting to see if Canon tries to bump up this number and appeal to adventure photographers or if it stays the course with the series and remains a better option for studio or nature shooters. It certainly has its bases covered with the 1D X when it comes to speed (which shoots 12fps in RAW).

So odds are it won’t be a speed demon, but we’re hoping to see an upgrade in this department none the less.

Nikon gives us our first look at its upcoming D6 professional DSLR
nikon d6 professional dslr first images teaser

Nikon unveiled a product photo of the D6 camera late Tuesday, September 3. The photo, which contrasts the black, dual-grip DSLR against a stark white background, offers insatiable camera news junkies their first glimpse of the upcoming flagship DSLR. While Nikon mentioned no details about the camera's specifications, the company called it its "most advanced DSLR to date," which makes sense as it will be its most recent flagship camera to date, and that's the direction progress moves.

From this perspective, the D6 looks almost identical to the camera it will replace, the $6,500 D5 that launched in 2016. The single-digit D series targets professional sports photographers and has often introduced Nikon's latest technologies which later trickle down to less expensive cameras. The D5 brought a 151-point autofocus system with superior sensitivity than past models. It also used a new 21-megapixel full-frame sensor that offered considerably less resolution than the 45MP D850, but with better speed and low-light sensitivity.
