Fuji Film today introduced the Fujifilm 512MB xD-Picture Card, a high-capacity flash memory format for digital cameras.

The new xD-Picture Card will begin shipping to consumer electronics, photography and other retailers later this summer.

The xD-Picture Card format, developed by Fujifilm and Olympus, was first introduced in September 2002. The new addition to the Fujifilm xD-Picture Card is expected to meet the increasing consumer demand for greater storage capacity. The development roadmap for the product predicts an eventual storage capacity of up to 8GB in a single card.

“The rapid development of more sophisticated, higher resolution digital cameras led to today’s announcement,” said John Bock, Vice President of Marketing and Sales, Consumer Audio and Video Products, Magnetic Markets Division, Fuji Photo Film U.S.A., Inc. “The great popularity and success of Fujifilm’s line of FinePix digital cameras will be further enhanced by the introduction of the 512 MB xD-Picture Card.”

The xD-Picture Card also minimizes power consumption to save battery life and provides fast read/write capabilities for smoother digital camera operation. Capacities of 64MB and higher read at a rate of 5MB/sec and write at a speed of 3MB/sec. PCMCIA and CompactFlash adapters are also currently available at local retailers, allowing the use of the xD-Picture Card in a variety of cameras and other devices from multiple manufacturers.
