Instagram massively popular on Android, adds one million users in just 12 hours

Released earlier this week for all Android smartphone owners, Instagram for Android is rapidly becoming an extremely popular application after more than one million users downloaded the app during the first twelve hours after release. According to Instagram, the application supports all smartphone devices that include a camera and runs Android 2.2 or above with support for OpenGL ES 2. Android powered phones without OpenGL ES 2 aren’t supported as the OpenGL technology is required for the various filters within the application. Instagram also supports a maximum resolution output of 2048 by 2048, but output is limited by camera technology and available memory.

The company is working diligently to include all the current features of the iPhone version in the Android version of the app. While the core features are present within the Android version, Instagram developers are working to include features like “Tilt Shift/Blur, Share from Feed, Live Preview and Share to Flickr” in the near future. When the two applications reach the same level of development, the company plans to roll out updates to both versions concurrently.

The development team at Instagram has already rolled out an update for the Android version of the application. On April 6, Instagram added support for Android tablets such as the Samsung Galaxy Tab and the ASUS Transformer Prime. However, the application doesn’t have support for landscape view yet on tablets, only portrait view for now.

The update also includes support for Wi-Fi only devices with rear-facing cameras like the Samsung Galaxy player. In addition to the expanded device support, Instagram can now be installed on a SD card in order to save space on storage. The recent update to Instagram for Android includes a variety of performance enhancements and bug fixes as well. The updated application can be found on the Google Play store. Instagram for Android is currently sporting a average review score of 4.5 stars out of five and has between one million to five million downloads already.
