I've had my X for almost a year now and I am thoroughly happy with it. I don't make huge prints but I do a lot of aviation shots which often requires cropping; I didn't want to lose a lot of resolution doing this so that is why I went with the X instead of the D40. The 1/500 flash sync speed wasn't as important to me.

I cannot say enough of good things about my D40X. I don't want/need the weight and complexity of the D200/300- too much time gets wasted fiddling with things. I have gotten so many compliments on my shots that I know the camera part of the 'equation' is right where it needs to be.

P.S. Don't decide whether to buy D40 or D40x solely on the resolution. Unless you're making a poster, you really won't see any differences between 6mp vs 10mp. If you're a casual user, then save your money and buy D40.

The main reason I went with D40x was it uses the same shutter mechanism (Electronically-controlled vertical-travel focal plane shutter) found in D80 and their pro-line models like D200 & D2Hs. The D40 has a combined mechanical and CCD electronic shutter perfect for someone looking for a great camera for a amazing price.

I bought the D40x last April and very satisfied with the camera. I used to be a longtime Canon user (Canon EOS-1V 35mm SLR). I've been looking at Canon's Digital Rebels but not quite happy with the specs especially for the cold-startup and shutter-delay time. I was ready to buy Nikon D80 when Costco came out with a special packaging deal with Nikon D40x, 2 lenses, 1GB SD and a Nikon camera bag for $999 (plus 50 free prints). Feature-for-feature, they are pretty neck-to-neck. The only feature I wish D40x had was a built-in remote flash commander in D80. Oh well, I'm ordering Nikon Speedline SB-800 with a remote commander to controll additional 3 wireless flashes. Other than a bragging rights to own D80, I'd say D40x is a pretty good bang for the money and I hightly recommend it.
