Panasonic’s Lumix TZ50 Beams to Picasa

Panasonic

Panasonic has introduced its new Lumix DMC-TZ50 digital camera with a 10× optical zoom, 9.1 megapixel resolution, integrated 802.1b/g Wi-Fi wireless networking, and the ability to upload images directly to Google’s free photo sharing service Picasa. And to let people leverage that Wi-Fi on the go, the camera comes with 12 month of free access via T-Mobile HotSpots.

"This advanced digital camera makes it possible for users to share their photos with friends and family with unprecedented ease and without a computer," said Panasonic’s national marketing manager for imaging Alex Fried, in a statement.

Users can set up a single email account with their TZ50 to receive notifications from Picasa; if they can pick up email on a cellphone or other mobile device, it’s easy for users to register an account, then receive and forward the URL for their Picasa gallery along to friends and family—all without using a computer.

The TZ50 packs a 3-inch LCD display along with a 28mm wide angle lens and the capability to record 720p high-definition video. (Users can also hook the camera up to a big screen using a component cable.) The camera also features Panasonic’s intelligent exposure technology, digital red-eye corrections, face detection (supporting up to 15 faces in a frame), continuous autofocus, and intelligent ISO with a high-sensitivity more all the way down to ISO 6,400. The TZ50 stores images to SD/SDHC cards, offers PictBridge compatibility, and intelligent scene selector that senses ambient conditions and automatically selects an appropriate scene mode.

The Lumix DMC-TZ50 will be available in May for a suggested retail price of $449.95.

The Panasonic Lumix S5: Everything we know
panasonic lumix s5 everything we know teaser

Panasonic teased the upcoming Lumix S5 mirrorless camera Wednesday, August 19, ahead of the official announcement set for September 2. This is Panasonic's first acknowledgment of the purportedly lower-end full-frame camera that has been heavily rumored.

If a leaked spec sheet is to be believed, the S5 will sit a tier below the Panasonic S1, a beefy mirrorless camera that earned a Digital Trends Editor's Choice award when we reviewed it in 2019. The S1 is a powerful, high-end camera that targets professional shooters. It also weighs more than most DSLRs. The S5 is rumored to weight 715 grams, making it about 30% lighter than the S1.

Vivo’s X50 Pro has a gimbal for super-steady video, and it really works
vivo x50 pro hands on review

Vivo is always worth paying attention to because of its willingness to showcase innovation, and the new X50 Pro is no exception. The in-display fingerprint sensor, the pop-up selfie camera, and the borderless  waterfall screen are all cutting-edge pieces of phone tech that we’ve experienced on Vivo devices first.

So what has the X50 Pro brought us? The camera uses a gimbal for super-steady photos and video, something it showed off at the beginning of the year in its Apex 2020 concept phone.

Panasonic takes on Sony in the vlogging camera game with compact Lumix G100
panasonic lumix g100 vlogging camera announced table top

The Sony ZV-1 was not a fluke. Vloggers are taking over, and camera manufacturers are reaching for this new market.

Panasonic charged into the vlogging game Wednesday, June 24, with the new Lumix G100, a compact mirrorless camera built for the modern content creator. Like the recently introduced Sony ZV-1, the G100 includes a number of features specifically for the niche vlogger market. But where the ZV-1 was essentially a point-and-shoot, the G100 is part of the Micro Four Thirds system, complete with a larger, 20-megapixel sensor and interchangeable lenses.
