Samsung Pushes Laser Printer Price To $150

The ML-1740 features both USB 1.1 and parallel interfaces, 8MB of memory, 600 by 600 dpi resolution, and 17-ppm speed for a thrifty $150. It’s compatible with Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP, and Linux.

Like its predecessor, the ML-1740 offers a 250-sheet paper cassette with 50-sheet, face-down output bin, plus a one-sheet bypass feeder for special media. A Toner Save button reduces toner consumption by 40 percent (a 1,000-page starter cartridge is included, with replacement cartridges rated for 3,000 pages). The compact (14.2 by 14.6 by 7.8-inch) printer has a duty cycle of 15,000 pages per month.

Samsung has also announced, though not yet priced, upgraded CLP-550 and Ethernet-ready CLP-550N versions of its 21/5-ppm color laser printer with automatic duplexing feature, the CLP-500. Compared to the original, the new models offer PostScript 3 and PCL-5Ce compatibility and a 266MHz PowerPC 603e processor for faster image rendering than the GDI-based CLP-500.
