Between the Streams: Rogue One sizzles, Stranger Things flies, Ghostbusters doesn’t suck

DT’s entertainment show, Between the Streams, is your guide to all of the hottest, most important, and (of course) dumbest new developments in streaming and entertainment, providing a handy recap of the week that was. (You can also add us via RSS, iTunes, or Stitcher at the links above to take BtS on the road!)

The Emmy noms are in, the weekend is rich with movies, Netflix is absolutely killing it courtesy of Stephen Spielberg’s brilliant ’80s sensibilities, and Disney just dumped a new Rogue One sizzle reel deep with practical effects. It’s another awesome week in entertainment, folks, so let’s get into it.

This week we highlight some of our favorite Emmy nominees, including none other than House himself, Mr. Hugh Laurie. If you haven’t yet seen The Night Manager, get ready to be intrigued as Hugh and fellow nominee Tom Hiddleston (aka Loki) battle it out Bond style for the fate of $300 million worth of illegal arms. We also talk about how many Brits there are in this year’s nominee list, and how Stephen Colbert got blocked out by both James Corden and Jerry Seinfeld’s Crackle series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

And how about the weekend movie outlook? There’s the glaringly obvious choice in the new Ghostbusters reboot which, spoiler alert, is not the steaming pile of you-know-what that the internet would have you believe. In fact, our reviewer Rick Marshall says it’s pretty darned enjoyable, so we’ll break things down a bit there, and highlight some sleeper picks for the weekend you might enjoy as an alternative in our Weekend Box Office Breakdown.

We’ll also, of course, be talking about the new Rogue One sizzle reel that just came out of the Star Wars Celebration event which, among other things, is steeped with director Gareth Edwards and Disney’s hard-lined focus on practical effects. To those of us raised on vintage Lucas lore, that’s sweet music to the ears.

And, naturally, we’ll touch on several other topics, so tune in to find out at 2 p.m. PT each Friday, or follow our podcast and take us on the road!

SpaceX has reinvigorated space exploration: There can be no doubt that putting a cherry red Tesla Roadster into space, as part of the Falcon Heavy X rocket launch on 2/ 5/18, captured the world's attention. It showcased what vision, ability, talent and a whole lot of money, can accomplish. The question now is what will Elon Musk do next? One would imagine that investors are clamoring to pour more money into future projects. This was also the world's greatest ad campaign for Tesla, for which there are some pretty bold plans in their own right. A letter was sent to shareholders stating that they are planning to send an autonomous Tesla car on a coast-to-coast trip in 2018.

Spotify vs. Apple: When it comes to overall users, there is no question that Spotify is the current leader in streaming music services. They have millions more subscribers (approximately 70 million total) than their closest rivals. However, Apple Music is now claiming to have 36 million of their own and according to the Wall Street Journal, is growing at nearly double the rate of Spotify. So, who do you use for streaming music and why?

how to photograph ghosts julie rieger crabman color circled

Forget selfies and sunsets, any ordinary iPhone can be used to take pictures of something far more intriguing: the spirit world.

Julie Rieger is the biggest of Hollywood bigwigs; she’s president, chief data strategist, and head of media at 20th Century Fox, where she’s worked on a few little films like Avatar, Deadpool, The Fault in Our Stars, and more. And in addition to being one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet, she’s an avid ghost photographer -- in fact, she wrote the book on it.
