I am another victim of ABS Mayhem. I’m not surprised you ate the bait marked “low price, high performance”, and did not read the fine print that says: “only works as long as the warranty time period”. I purchased the same laptop for $1,600 and it crashed (doesn’t even boot to bios!) a month after my warranty was over(that is 13 months).

the laptop performed amazingly well when i recieved it. we were planning a trip to india, and this laptop would be the ultimate accessory for all our music and photo-editing needs. it ran all those high end applications (sound and image editing) and we relied on it to save all the photographs we took on the trip. i loved showing this thing off and telling all my friends who were planning on buying a laptop to get an abs. too bad abs makes me look like a jerk now…
after less than 6 months of use, the laptop suddenly started switching off randomly… we’d be watching a movie or listening to music when the screen would inexplicably go dead on us. no matter how much time we let the laptop cool down (in front of a 20″ table fan), it would die in 5 minutes of use
we decided to send it back to newegg (we bought this from newegg/com), because we ‘knew’ how great abs’ and newegg’s service was. we sent it in after we got back to the us (guess who paid $80 for shipping? they paid to ship it back though), and it sat in the abs service center for about2 and a half months, with our warranty clock ticking, ofcourse (how a company can provide a warranty period and then use up almost a quarter of it is beyond me)
after recieving the laptop, we were less overjoyed than we were at recieving it, but we were happy nonetheless. that happiness was shortlived, when WITHIN A MONTH the motherboard smelled like microchips in a microwave. burning silicon is not a pleasant smell to wake up to. ofcourse, the laptop would not boot up, the green led on the power adaptor was blinking (obviously an error somewhere) and we could elicit no response from the laptop
so we call abs again, hoping for their ‘always better service’ to show up after having a crappy product from them twice. after 10 days of trying to reach a supervisor (the customer reps gave me the option of paying 500 for a replacement, after getting me to open up the computer and fiddle with the ram modules and wireless card) the abs supervisor denied all responsibility, claiming the following possibilities:
1.i might have misused it (i’m a computer engineer, my wife is a graphic designer, i think we know how to use a computer)
2.the laptop was under their ‘error margin’ where out of hundred laptops, 10 would be defective… REMEMBER THAT: 1/10 of their products blow
so now i’m left with a $1800 (i got the memory upgrade) once succulent, now shrivelled up, lemon
if abs or newegg can’t help me out, this EXTREMELY DISSATISFIED customer is going to the Better Business Bureau
ABS does NOT live up to their name, save yourself the money and buy a reliable product, instead of getting a short period of high performance and crap after that
abysmal is’nt the word, but it’s close
