Great for burning DVD’s and CDs.

Really bad for dual layer disks. Too “selective” never finishes well. I’ve lost 40% of my DVD’s trying to use this recorder. Don’t buy it.

First – This drive is OK.

It can burn almost anything, and is mostly reliable (more on this later).

    At 16x, A DVD-r (4.7GB) is burnt inside 25 Minutes, Dual-Layer 55 Minutes.

Overally a great drive from Asus.

    Secondly – The Bad.

In my case, This drive is installed in a Server. The job was a backup of a 160gb drive.

It took 30 dvd’s to complete – 5 of which had issues.

    The issues were:

Unable to copy all information off the disc. At About a third of the way in, the windows event log filled with “A bad sector has been detected on Device0 -dvd-rw” and the file it was on was unrecoverable.

    Another issue:

After burning a dvd full of data, i was unable to burn the lightscribe label. The pc had to be restarted in order to do so, and it does it every time.

This is annoying as it forces you to do things in a batch, so say on a large backup like mine, i had to burn all the labels – and then the data, some 12 hours later =.

Levelling: (So you know, it’s possibly not my hardware)

The server is a brand new dual core, dual cpu, 6gb ram, 3tb+ home built server from components.
