I called the number on the http://consumer.usa.canon.com/ir... website mentioned in the review below and they told me I had to pay to get it fixed. Same issue, no picture and “Remove the Cassette” message. Have they repaired this camera for anyone else for free?

Canon finally admit it is their problem and willing to good will and fix my Elura50’s “Remove cassette” and mosaic/counter-error problem for free (I’ve owned it for 22 months)

Bought the camera in December 2003. Never was reliable. Eventually didn’t film at all..remove the cassette all the time. Recently I sent the camera to Jamesburg NJ for repair. Three week later got it back. Filmed for ten minutes then remove the cassette error again. I’ve sent it back again. I phoned a lawyer…his advice…everybody write a letter to your state’s Attorney General. I did. I also enclosed copies of website complaints. We need to complain loudly to get some representation for us. I spent $752.49 for this camera and its accessories. Alot of $$$ for nothing. I also asked Canon for my money back…yeah, right!

  4. Worst Camcorder among a bad line

I have 2 Canon Eluras which both developed the “Remove cassette” problem and speak from experience. Since Canon denies any responsibility for this defect I have started a website to form a group interested in starting a class-action suit against Canon. Almost 1 out of 3 responses involves an Elura 50, but the problem involves the Optura, ZR and even the GL series as well. If you are thinking of buying Canon, do a google search under “Canon remove cassette action” first, or visit my website to see how big a problem this really is.

Ok so everyone with the dreaded “remove cassette error” go to cannon’s website. They have realized the problem and are encouraging us to bring the cameras in. Be careful however….. I brought mine in and it was “repaired” and when I got it back it ate all the tapes I put in it. So i returned it again and they are “repairing” it once again.

I am in the same boat as the other reviewers. Does anyone have information on how to fix this error message. I’ve missed so many great vidoe oppportunities due to the remove cassette error. I can’t believe that I paid as much as I did for a camera that is now a paperweight.
I had to rate this at a 1 because it wouldn’t allow for a zero.

Nice camcorder when it’s working. Have taken back 2 so far with remove cassette message, as well as having the thing playback mosaic on previously fine tapes. Not dependable at all, sorry I got a canon.

  13. DO NOT BUY A CANNON

Great features for price; however, what good are the features when the camera has a manufacturing defect: one that Cannon will not accept. Do a search for “REMOVE CASSETTE ERROR” and you will find enough complaints to make your head spin. Or, for starters, check out 8 pages worth of complaints from cannon consumers, http://www.camcorderinfo.com/bbs/showthread.php?t=19001&page=1&pp=15

I bought the Elura 50. The “Remove Cassette” error started four days after my $500.00 purchase, rendering the camera useless. Yes I am returning this camera!
Save yourself some headache, time and expense, DO NOT BUY A CANNON!
