Excellence at a fair price

Just bought my 5D a couple of weeks back. Compared to my 300D it is fantastic.
It will take me ages to sort through all the options on offer, but I will have a great time learning.
Only gripe is why sellers of lenses do not make it clear some lenses do not work with full frame camera. Wasted $600.

A Great Camera that you do not always have to spend a fortune to buy
By: Christopher

This camera IS a TOP OF THE LINE Canon Camera! I have owned a lot of Canon cameras and all of them I have had NO problems with EVER. I gave my sister a Powershot Canon about a year ago which was about 4 years old and it still takes beautiful pictures!
As for price, I realize the “Retail” price is over $3,000.00 BUT if you are savvy enough to go through the Internet you can find this camera for UNDER $1000 dollars, and a “Premium Package” which does include 2 lenses and a compact flash card, high speed card reader, Tripod, Leather Case, Cleaning accessories, and much MORE. On one site the “Macro Package” the camera comes with a very long lens and sells still for $1,649.00 you get all of the above PLUS a Digital Photo Printer on top of it.

“No built-in flash” Are you serious? If you’re buying a camera like this then the last thing you’ll be using is the internal flash. That’s what the XT and XTi were for.
Worthless review. Nothing but a stats spit out.

Francis is an idiot.
By: Wise Guy

Francis is more likely an angry and jealous Nikon user who ignorantly made the mistake of buying Nikon equipment instead of Canon. His review of the 5D holds no claim and he has no merit as a photographer.

Good choice for studio photography

In short if you want a rugged fast reportage body don’t get the 5d in canon line go for series 1. In nikon line you might think about the d200, it is a small good full featured body, with image quality to satisfy the most pro’s. *on approval list at Getty’s too.
I think in case of cameras, the image quality is not the only thing to concern. There is another factor, the usability of the body, and the system. I think you can’t go wrong with either system. Canon’s mid priced body excellent for low light photography, Nikon’s body for fast action photo (though there can be slight problem’s with autofocus, some reviewers reported). I feel that if you on a tight budget, than get the nikon and some decent lenses for the price of the 5D kit, if you won’t run out of cash, go for Canon, although you will catch yourself up spending something about 6k bucks on lenses and accessories :)) (including the body) If you can justify the price, ok. BTW the d200 noise at 800 is well controlllable, and 5fps vs 3fps? so what, average user won’t see the difference, only in specs, GPS support ok, it’s good to have the coordinates in exif, but also you can put a point in your GPS device also, then insert in the exif if you want. So the big difference is in price as I see it. So if you have the money go for Canon, but do not sell you Ferrari for it, be smart and go for the nikon
:)

5D is more better then D200
By: Hong Kong
April 16, 2006 @ 1:14 PM12ppm4>
I’ve got this camera , I tried this two camera for over a month. during this period in different weather and lighting , the 5D’s pic is more solid and more detailed then D200, D200 only with a more comfortable when holding in hand. When you see the pic at full size , you will found the different .
Yesterday, I sold all of my Nikon equipments to my friend and keep the Canon’s equipments only.
The price of D200 is more attractive then 5D. nearly just the half price of 5D . In this price D200 is worth and give you a great pics.

A worthy upgrade
By: Jimmy Chen
February 10, 2006 @ 6:23 PM06ppm2>
I have been a Canon EOS camera user for over 13 years. It is hard for me to move digital without substantial consideration due to my large collection of lenses and accessories. I was looking for a worthy DSLR for a while but the only viable option was the EOS 1Ds and the later 1Ds MkII. Simple reason, full size CMOS and a body I was familiar with (I use EOS 1v). However, at such a high price, I couldn’t justify the purchase. Then Canon released 10D and then 20D, its functions allowed me to think twice about upgrading from film to digital… yet the only downsize was its APS-C size CMOS. Some of my older and 3rd party lenses such as Sigma EX range were not compatible with it. The good news is that the wait is finally finished. 5D really gives me the chance to enjoy not only full frame high resolution pictures, but it also allows me to use my entire collection of lenses. The comments from other users were right however, with such resolution, a good lens is needed to produce reasonable results. Canon’s L series and Sigma’s EX series are virtually the only options in my opinion. I tested my other lenses and some produced below-par quality. Therefore, it pushes me to the next level. When it’s hard to see in film, it’s very obvious on computer screen. It’s now time to fully experience high quality pictures. A suggestion to other users or potential buyers, each DLSR is different. Nikon, Canon, Konica Minota… etc, they all have their advantages. Therefore, some reviews are simply not useful. To judge yourself, depending on your experience in photography, brands that you are familiar with, body type, your usage, and more importantly, the OS in the camera (that’s the menu interface)… the easier to understand the better. I do prefer Canon’s menu system, very direct and simple to adjust but it’s your choice. Two complaints for this camera and that’s why I couldn’t give 10 points: I am so used to 1v’s 100% view finder coverage and the weather protection seals from my 1v. In this respect, Nikon’s D200 wins.

A great camera
By: James
January 17, 2006 @ 6:06 AM46pam1>
I had an EOS 10D for nudging three years, and the money I saved on film and processing helped offset the inital outlay. I tend to print less these days too; modern computer storage is getting cheaper and is easier to access than transparancies. I sold the 10D to help pay for a 5D plus 24-135 ‘L’ lens. This new combination produces wonderful results straight from the camera. Color reproduction is as faithful as you want it to be and exposure in shadow breathtaking. I will never knock Nikon kit, but having tried a D200 I will just beg to differ from the previous poster. The best question will be is a 5D better than a 20D and its likely sucessor? Can’t comment on the latter, but a 5D is better than a 10D for me. If the 20D is just a bit better than a 10D then draw your own conclusion. By the way, a 5D and a cheap Canon EF lens will produce less than perfect results. I tried my old EF 28-80 MkII and was staggered by how badly the combination performed. So if you want the best from a 5D you will need some decent glass to go with it.

EOS 5D Blows the Nikon D200 Away
By: ProPhoto
January 16, 2006 @ 2:15 PM04ppm1>
The Canon 5D and the Nikon D200 are not even in the same class. Don’t listen to the Nikon fanboy bashing posted here. It is amazing how some folks have to try to tear down one product to justify their selection. Noise on the D200 above iso 400 is terrible. Don’t take my word; read the unbiased reviews and you’ll see. Image quality on the 5D is awesome at all iso settings. Image quality and fine detail is second to none at this price.

Canon 5D is not justified
By: Francis
January 11, 2006 @ 11:29 AM48pam1>
I read the review and cannot agree. I thoroughly tested on site both the Canon 5D and the Nikon D200 for 1 full month. It’s a no brainer that the Nikon D200 is more flexible, faster, more accurate in colors, crisper, has less tangible noise (Canon still produces a heavy chrominance noise while Nikon shows a film-like noise, only grainy). Well, the full frame here has no justification, nor has the price. Honestly, I have chosen to buy the Nikon to have better lenses for less and no distortion in colors. Unless you are looking for average-customer saturated colors and a cheap-feeling body, you couldn’t go for Canon 5D.
